Camels dash Mustang Hopes for another District Championship
March 1, 2014By Christopher Jennings of Bishop Brossart High School
On Friday night, the Campbell County Camels took away any hopes the Mustangs had of adding another district championship trophy to their trophy case. The Mustangs got out of the gate early on the hot hand of Drew Burns who scored 13 points in the first half. The Camels fought back and cut the lead to 20-13 at the end of the first quarter. Corey Holbrook, who would pace the Campbell’s with 18 points, kept the Camels within striking distance. And that they did, putting up 16 points in the second quarter to go to the locker room with a one point lead at 36-35.
The second half saw both teams battle back and forth, neither team able to surmount any type of attack and gain a sizeable lead. The fourth quarter saw the early exit of Jake Jennings and Spencer Hackworth who both fouled out of the game. The Camels hit key shots down the stretch and the Mustangs who established a strong inside game, could not establish a perimeter game, hitting only 1 of 13 from beyond the arc.
Drew Burns finished with 19 points while Alex Trentman added 13, Austin Shannon 7, Erik Rieger 5. With the loss, the Mustangs are 23-4 on the season. Both teams head to the regional tournament, with the drawing to occur at 10:30 AM this morning. Good luck to both teams.
The highlight of this game was the performance of Corey Holbrook from Campbell County. Great kid, from a great family. Although any loss can be tough to swallow, seeing a young man, that is so likeable, have success is special. Corey played with several of the Mustang seniors over the summer on an AAU team. The Mustang family got to know the Holbrook family and the players bonded with Corey. Congrats to Corey on being named MVP of the district tournament.
