Lady 'Stangs Win District Title

February 28, 2014
By Melvin Webster of Bishop Brossart High School

A great American once said “It is all together fitting and proper that we do this.” The talented group of Bishop Brossart seniors have a huge list of accomplishments but two things had eluded them. They took care of one of those tonight winning their first 37th District Title coming from behind to topple upstart Scott 50-47 at Campbell Co. Middle School.

Scott came out sprinting to early leads of 9-4 and 12-6. They held a 20-18 lead at the intermission. They led 34-31 before Sarah Futscher hit a three pointed at the buzzer to tie it 34-34 after three.

In a rough physical fourth quarter, The Lady 'Stangs seemed to take control leading by seven but when Scott's Ally Niece (20 points) drilled a three bomb with 22.7 seconds left it was suddenly only a 48-47 advantage. Abby Stadtmiller was fouled with 15.6 seconds left and calmly drilled two free throws to make the final score at 50-47.

Despite the close score Brossart led almost every category. They outrebounded Scott 33-25, outshot them 41.7 to 32.7, made 16 free throws to Scott's 8, scored more points off turnovers and second chance points and points in the paint (12 to 6)

Senior Sarah Futscher was MVP with a 13 point 15 rebound 2 blocked shot effort, Morgan Verst joined her on the All-Tourney Team scoring 13 along with sophomore Sydney Shannon who sparked the comeback off the bench with a 6 point, 2 rebound 2 assist contribution.

The Lady 'Stangs (22-5) and Scott (18-12) advance to next week's 10th Region tournament at Mason County. The draw will be at 10 AM Saturday. Brossart will now play a District Runnerup (Montgomery Co., Mason Co. or Harrison Co.).

Niece and Jill Buntin were all-tourney for Scott.

Congrats Lady 'Stangs
