Mustangs rebound to take down the Royals
February 19, 2014By Christopher Jennings of Bishop Brossart High School
The Bishop Brossart Mustangs were presented with a difficult challenge on Tuesday night. Either pick up their intensity on both ends of the floor or suffer a loss against one of the premier teams in the 10th Region. The Mustangs were down 20-5 in the first quarter of play. However, they found their stride offensively and found that intensity on defense. By halftime, they were only down two points at 32-30. In the second half, the Stangs came out on fire, hitting four quick three pointers to go up on the Royals. They would get the lead and hang on to it for the remainder of the game. Final score Bishop Brossart 67 Mason County 60.
Erik Rieger played a whale of a game, dealing with the Royals intense ball pressure, while putting up 7, including two key three pointers early in the second half. Spencer Hackworth (7 pts) knocked down a three and played consistent defense all night long. Austin Shannon (4 pts) continues to impress the crowd with his athleticism and defensive efforts. Clay Kramer and Dylan Geiman provided quality minutes coming off the bench for the Mustangs and combining for 6 points.
Drew Burns played arguably, his best game of the season. He scored 15 points in the first half and finished with 25 for the night, while grabbing 9 rebounds. Alex Trentman, who recorded his 26 consecutive double-double, added 18 points and 7 rebounds.
The highlight of this game was the two key three pointers by Erik Rieger to start the second half. It set the tone for the Mustangs, gave them the lead, and got the student section pumped. Hats off to Erik. Great game. Next up for the Mustangs is a key district matchup with Scott High School to determine seeding for the district tournament. Go Mustangs
