Mustangs Dismissed Early in All A
February 2, 2014By Christopher Jennings of Bishop Brossart High School
The Bishop Brossart Mustangs came into the Touchstone Energy All A Classic, a top 5 favorite to win this tournament. The St. Mary Vikings had an opinion of their own, taking down the Mustangs 38-36. From the very beginning of this game, it was evident that the Vikings strength was their guard play and excellent defense. Our guards, being down one, had the difficult task of bringing the ball up the floor and distributing to teammates against the Vikings relentless defense. The Mustangs grabbed an early lead on a three by Spencer Hackworth, but the Vikings charged back to take a 11-10 lead a the end of the first period. The Vikings dominated the 2nd quarter running out to a 21-13 lead at the half. In the second half, the Mustangs found their rhythm and went on a 12-5 run, closing the gap to within one point at 26-25 by the end of the third quarter. The Mustangs would regain the lead in the 4th quarter with 3:28 left to play, on a three pointer by Hackworth. The Mustang lead would grow to five before things fell apart. Turnovers and missed free throws would be the Mustangs demise, as they would commit 12 turnovers in the game and go 6-17 from the free throw line. The Vikings would hit a floater in the lane as time expired to seal the win and advance to the next round.
The Mustangs were led by Trentman with 12 points, Burns with 10 points, and Hackworth with 9 points. They will return home and begin preparing for Augusta on Tuesday, February 4.
We wish the Lady Stangs the best of luck as they continue on in the tournament.
