Mustangs hold off the Thorobreds
January 25, 2014By Christopher Jennings of Bishop Brossart High School
The Bishop Brossart Mustangs had the tough task of defeating the Harrison County Thorobreds in a classic matchup between Harrison's Dillon Pulliam and Alex Trentman. It was a reunion, of sorts, for these two players, along with Austin Shannon, Erik Rieger, Drew Burns, and Jacob Jennings, who played together on a summer AAU team. Alex stole the show tonight, scoring 21 points on the night, and eclipsing the 1000 point mark for his career.
The Mustangs jumped out early, running out to a 20-13 lead at the end of the first period. The Mustangs went to the locker room at the half, up 32-25. The second half produced the 17th installment to the Brossart 1000 point club, when Alex put a stick back into the basket to eran the right to join the elite club. Mike Code called a time out following Trentman's accomplishment to present him with a ball commemorating the event and allowing the fans and teammates an opportunity to show their appreciation to Alex. The Mustangs went on to defeat the Thorobreds 60-49. Alex Trentman led the Mustangs with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Drew Burns, who dominated the first half, scored 16 points and 9 rebounds. Erik Rieger did a great job at point guard and scored 9 points. Spencer Hackworth knocked down a pair of 3-Pointers and finished the night with 7 points. Austin Shannon played very well and chipped in 6 points.
The highlight of this game was obviously, Alex scoring his 1000 point. Having watched Alex for so many years and knowing the family so well, it was very special to see Alex surpass this milestone. I know that Jake would have liked to have been on the floor with Alex to share this moment with Alex. Congratulations to Alex on this great achievement. Enjoy the moment.
The Mustangs now prepare for the Touchstone Engery All A Classic. The Mustangs will take on the winner of Region 1 in the tournament next Thursday night in the Frankfort Convention Center.
