Mustangs All A Champs
January 23, 2014By Christopher Jennings of Bishop Brossart High School
It took a quarter for the Mustangs to figure out how they were going to compete without their point guard, Jake Jennings. They led only by a point at 10-9. In the second quarter, they found their stride and began to create some separation from their opponents, the Robertson County Black Devils. They put up 21 points in the quarter to only two for the Black Devils taking a 20 point lead to the locker room at halftime. The second half was more of the same, as the Mustangs threw up another 31 points in the second half to put the game away for good. The final score, Mustangs 62, Robertson County 28.
Alex Trentman led the Mustangs with 21 points and 10 rebounds, zeroing in on his trek to 1000 points. He needs only 19 points to reach that summit. If all goes well, he may reach the mark on Friday night against Harrison County. Erik Reiger, assuming the point guard role vacated by the injury to Jennings, did a yeoman's work, leading the Mustang attack and putting up 14 points, hitting 4 three pointers in the victory. Drew Burns added 7 points and Spencer Hackworth chipped in 5 points.
The unequivocal highlight of this game, was welcoming Ted MacDonald back to the hardwood, after missing the first half of the season, and all of the football season to a broken hand. The crowd roared, when Ted was announced into the game. Ted responded by grabbing 4 rebounds and adding 7 points for the Mustangs. It is great to have Ted back playing with the team again.
Erik Reiger was name to the 10th Region All A Academic Team, while Trentman, Burns, and Jennings were named to the 10th Region All A Tournament Team. A nice gesture to name Jennings to the team, after suffering the broken hand in practice last Friday.
