Mustangs Henry County Holiday Tournament Champs
December 30, 2013By Christopher Jennings of Bishop Brossart High School
The Brossart Mustangs claimed championship honors last night, taking home the hardware in a tough fought game, in a great basketball atmosphere. For those who had watched Henry County in yesterday's game, might have thought that this would be an easy game for the Stangs. That was not to be the case, as the Wildcats wanted the win and to keep the championship trophy at home.
The first half saw the Mustangs battle both the Wildcats and the referees, as Alex Trentman Spencer Hackworth and Drew Burns all were relegated to the bench early with foul trouble. Austin Shannon stepped in to fill the void and played an outstanding game. The Mustangs won the first quarter 16-7 however, the Wilcats took the second stanza, ending the half with the Mustangs up 26-24.
The second half saw more of the same. Shannon stepped up and played great basketball until he made a drive to the basket and his legs were taken taken out from underneath and he landed hard on his back. He would eventually return to the game, but will be extremely sore today. The game would go back and forth and the Mustangs would get a 10 point lead only to see the Wildcats would roar back to close the gap. In the end, the Mustangs would take their time on offense, taking care of the ball and eating away at the clock. The Wildcats were forced to foul to both stop the clock and to regain possession of the ball. The Mustangs hit 19 of 26 from the free throw line. The final in this game was 67-55, securing the win and the championship. Alex Trentman scored 17 points to lead all scorers. Jake Jennings added 13 points and Spencer Hackworth and Austin Shannon each added 10 points.
The Mustangs are now 12-1 on the season and now head back home to await the Crosstown Classic with Cambell County Camels on Friday, January 3 at the Campbell County Middle School with the Freshman at 4:30 PM, JV at 6:00 PM, and Varsity at 7:30 PM.
