December 28, 2013By Melvin Webster of Bishop Brossart High School
Senior Abby Stadtmiller put and exclamation mark on a special night in Hebron by scoring her 1,000th career point in leading her team to the Pool Championship of the Larosa's Holiday Classic at Conner High School. She not only dropped in a threebomb for the milestone but ended as the game's leading scorer with 24 points as Brossart outlasted host Conner (4-3) 67-61 in Overtime. She joins teammate Sarah Futscher in the school's 1,000 Point Club. It was Brossart's second win of the day. Earlier they topped Belfrey 51-7. They finish 3-0 as Pool Champions and will play Highlands (who slipped by Boone Co. 52-40) in the Title game at 4:30 saturday. It will match the 9-0 Lady 'Stangs against 6-1 Highlands.
Stadtmiller and Futscher are the only duo to play together in a season at Brossart each with 1,000 points. Abby becomes the 12th player to reach the elite club.
Overall it was a special day for Brossart with the boys also advancing to the Championship of the Henry County Invitational beating perhaps the two best teams in the tourney LaRue County 71-61 and Louisville Desales 55-45. Alex Trentman scored 62 of the team's 126 points with two game performances of 35 and 27. The Mustangs will play host Henry Co. at 8 PM in New Castle Saturday.
Homestanding Conner proved to be a worthy opponent for the undefeated Lady 'Stangs Friday night. The two teams battled hard back and forth with the game tied 8 times and the lead exchanging hands 6 times.
Brossart jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead before Conner stormed back running off 15 straight points to take their longest lead of the night at 15-6. The Lady 'Stangs would eventually take a 26-20 halftime lead outscoring the women of Stamm 16-5 in the second period. Conner then returned the favor with a 22-13 advantage in the third stanza before Brossart tied the game late to send it into overtime. The overtime period, although close, was owned by the Lady 'Stangs 10-4.
Brossart led in most categories outrebounding Conner 45-35 led by Sarah Futscher crafty board work with 16. They outscored Conner from the line 14-10, second chance points 11-9, defensive stops 41-35, and pts off the bench 7-2. The two teams were even in three point totals with 27 each and shot 52.9% from the line. Conner held a slight 39.6% to 37.9% edge from the field.

The opener was a one sided affair with Brossart leading Belfrey, from the 15th Regio, 26-6 at the half then outscoring the Lady Pirates 25-1. Even Blackbeard couldn't have saved the ship for Belfrey (3-7). Morgan Verst had 13 and Abby Stadtmiller had 11 for the Lady 'Stangs who at one time went on a 41-2 run after Belfrey scored first. Lady Pirate star Emily Baker was held to just 2 points.
