Lady 'Stangs Knock Off Shelby Co. 58-41
December 27, 2013By Melvin Webster of Bishop Brossart High School
It was a quality win for the Lady 'Stangs in the opening round of the Larosa's Conner Holiday Classic. When the final buzzer sounded Bishop Brossart remained undefeated at 8-0 and Shelby County dropped to 6-2 (third best record in the 8th Region). Sarah Futscher had an excellent game finishing with 14 points to earn the “Player of the Game” honors.
Shelby holds some nice wins including a 56-53 win over Gallatin Co. You might remember Shelby County as the boy's Sweet 16 Champions in 1978 coached by recent Hall of Fame Inductee Tommy Creamer.
Overall though it was a solid team effort. Following closely behind Futscher's effort was Abby Stadtmiller with 12 (also 4 assists), Morgan Verst with 10 and Emily Schultz with 8 points and 8 rebounds. Kayla Young also contributed 5.
Early it looked like it might be a game with BBHS holding a slim margin but then the Lady 'Stangs spurted to a 22-11 lead only to see the Lady Rockets cut it to four by intermission.
Brossart looked like a definite region contender at times leading a good team by as many as 18 in settling in for a 58-41 victory in Hebron.
They showed some depth as always with 8 players contributing 9 plus mi nutes on the court.
The Lady 'Stangs out rebounded Shelby County 36-26 and outshot their 8th Region counterparts 41.5% to 38.9%. Shelby County's Junior Forward Makenzie Raizor led all scorers with 23, but her twin Savannah was held to just 4.
Brossart led in free throw points 10-9, Pts off turnovers 13-5, three point efficiency 55% t0 14%, and held a huge 24-5 edge in second chance points. The aggressive Lady 'Stang defense forced the Lady Rockets into 19 turnovers.
The Lady 'Stangs will have two games tomorrow taking on Belfry at Noon and then Conner in the nightcap at 8:30.
Belfry, from the 15th Region is 3-6 and despite star junior guard Emily Baker (23) it appears a win setting up a showdown between Conner and Shelby Co. for the pool title assuming Conner slips by Shelby County. Conner is 5-2 with their two losses coming to Cincinnati McNicholas and Cooper.
