Mustangs survive the Bluebirds
December 21, 2013By Christopher Jennings of Bishop Brossart High School
The Mustangs survived a hot gym and the hot hand of the Bluebirds Brendan Buten on Friday night. The Mustangs jumped out to an early 8-0 lead on three point field goals by Jacob Jennings and Erik Reiger. It looked as if the Mustangs would roll on for the easy win however, the Bluebirds would battle back to make for a nail biting finish. At 5'5, senior Brendan Buten would take his team on his back and almost single handedly, will the Bluebirds back into this game. Buten would score 21 points on the night, the highlight which was a 40 foot three pointer to end the first half and keep the Bluebirds within 10 points of the Mustangs.
As has been the case in many games this year, phantom fouls caused problems for the Mustangs. Jennings was hit with two early fouls and was relegated to the bench for much of the game. Drew Burns, who only had one foul in the first half, picked up several quick fouls in the second half and fouled out with about four minutes left to play. Jennings also fouled out making the bench play an important part of this game. Austin Shannon came off the bench to score 8 points for the game and bring a much needed spark and energy to the Mustangs. Austin was active on the boards, hit a nice three to extend the lead, and played strong defense. Alex Trentman led the Mustangs with 20 points, Erik Rieger with 10, Shannon 8, Burns 6, Jennings 5 and Hackworth 2.
The Mustangs will play Calvary Christian on Saturday at 3:30 pm. The JV's begin at 2:00 pm.
