Mustangs Complete Spectacular Year
October 29, 2013Bishop Brossart High School
The Bishop Brossart Mustangs played in the Sweet 16 State Tournament tonight before a packed house full of Mustangs fans. It was a great night for soccer and even though Brossart lost the Mustang Nation was very proud of them. It was great to see so many former players and fans at the game.
The Mustangs incredible journey started in Lexington this year in August during the Bluegrass Games. The Mustangs swept the 3 games and completed the preseason with a 5-0 record beating Covington Catholic and even crossed the bridge to Ohio and beat Madeira who last year was an Elite Eight Team. They won the Harrison County Tournament, the Scott County Tournament and went 10-0 to start the season (includes preseason) and then a 9-0 run that included the All A State Championship. They then went and won the 37th District for the second time in a row and the 10th Region. They were ranked as high as 11th in the state poll. The team and players picked up many different awards on the year as well as many goals and many shutouts.
The Big Green Scoring Machine was one of the top scoring teams in the history of the program. The defense also played amazing and gave the fans a lot of great memories and each player a championship ring that will last a lifetime.
As for the game this evening Goliath beat David and the Number #1 ranked Dunbar, 6A school showed why they will win the state championship this year. The Bulldogs scored their first goal of the night in the 12th minute of the game off a header. PLD scored again in the 18th minute off a free kick to make it 2-0. The Bulldogs scored in the 36th minute and then scored again with 3 seconds left in the half for the 4-0 lead.
Hall of Fame Coach, Brian Goller and staff made some great adjustments at the half and the Mustangs had a little more life in them and would not die attitude. The Mustangs picked up their first goal of the night in the 59th minute when Nick Dierig sent a blast that ricocheted off one of the Dunbar defenders and past the keeper. The Mustangs picked up the second goal in the 71st minute when Jacob Jennings sent a rocket past the keeper and the Mustangs were in business. The Mustangs had a couple more nice chances in the game and with under a minute left had a breakaway, but Dunbar’s keeper made a great save and then time ran out on the Mustangs season.
As for the tale of the tape we have it below.
We have to say a big thank you for the Mustang students that came out for the game tonight and the fans. We now have to say goodbye to our Seniors as they have completed their journey with the Mustang program.
Congratulation to the Seniors on a great year. Drew Berkemeyer, Andrew Erickson, Andrew Graus, Jake Jennings, Eli Nienaber, Mitch Parnell, Drew Miller, John Geiman, Luke Ridder, and Josh Keuper.
We will have a couple more stories as we have the induction ceremony into the Hall of Fame for Brian Goller and the Mustangs Awards Banquet and the All Star Game.
