Mustangs Head to ALL A State, In Elite 8
September 18, 2013Bishop Brossart High School
The Bishop Brossart Mustangs traveled down Route 8 and beat the Newport Catholic Thoroughbreds in a thrilling come from behind 2-1 victory. The victory books a date in Elizabethtown for the Touchstone Energy All A Classic.
The Mustangs clinched its first Elite 8 appearance since 2008. A great crowd was on hand to witness the game. The Mustangs dominated the first 20 minute of the game putting the pressure on Newcath’s defense, but couldn’t find the net as the NewCath keeper made some great saves.
Both teams seem to settle in as NewCath started to get a few chances as well. In the 31st minute NewCath won a corner kick. A perfectly placed ball was initially blocked by Brossart, but the rebound found the foot of a NewCath player and into the net for the 1-0 lead. The Mustangs again put pressure on the Thoroughbreds, but couldn’t find the nylon and the first period ended1-nil.
Coach Goller worked his magic and a few choice words in his halftime speech as the Mustangs came out ready to play. Dylan Geiman got the equalizer in the 48th minute of the game. Dylan was able to get one over the head of NewCath’s keeper that found the corner net. John Geiman got the credit for the pass to Dylan and the assist.
Coach Goller worked his bench like an engineer as he made multiple substitutions to give his players rest. This seemed to work in Brossart’s favor as NewCath seemed to tire later in the game. In the 78th frame Jake Jennings gave his Dad ( his birthday today) and the Brossart faithful a great big present, which was the game winner and a trip to the Touchstone Energy Elite 8 ALL A Tournament. Jake took a shot that hit the far post and ricocheted into the net for the eventual game winner. Eli Nienaber made a great pass to Jake for the game winning assist.
The Mustangs had 16 shots and 9 on goal. NewCath had 11 shots and only 3 on goal. The Mustangs had 6 corners to only 3 for NewCath.
The Mustangs improve their record to 9-1 on the season as Newport Catholic falls to 7-3-1. The Mustangs will play the winner of the 13th/14th Region on September 28th at 3:00pm in Elizabethtown.
Next up for the Mustangs are the Boone County Rebels who are 8-3-1 on the season after a 4-2 win vs Campbell County on Tuesday.
