Lady Stangs Varsity Elevates Past Highlands
September 4, 2013By Brad Gough of Bishop Brossart High School
The Lady Stangs entered their match against Highlands on Tuesday with something to prove. With 2 long time starters out due to injury, and 3 others limited or returning to action for the first time since coming off injury no one would have blamed them for under achieving in this match. "When 1 starter goes down it starts a domino effect that often pulls many players out of position," Coach Brad Gough said after the match, "but credit the team for stepping up and leaving nothing to doubt in this game."
What might have been a nervy start as players settled into new roles was ended just 7 minutes in when Junior Abby Anderson, making her first Varsity start, slid a near post cross into Senior Forward Abby Stadtmiller. Stadtmiller left no doubt in netting her 4th goal of the season as she latched onto the cross and burried it near post. It was Stadtmiller again nearly 20 minutes later that doubled the Lady Stangs' lead by beating her defender with some nifty footwork and tucking in another shot near post.
The first half continued as Highlands upped the tempo in an attempt to get back into the game. Senior Goal Keeper Sarah Futscher was forced into a few key saves as the Brossart defense came under pressure. Sophomore Amanda Graus made a goal saving tackle just 12 yards out and denied Highlands their best chance of the game. Then, just when it seemed like Highlands would be the next to score Stadtmiller received a pass from Junior Nicole Goderwis in the box and laid a nice pass off to fellow Senior Madison Linebach who clinically finished far post from 18 yards to bring the score to 3-0.
The Lady Stangs found the 2nd half to be much tougher as the 3-0 lead saw them shift into cruise control. Highlands pushed for a consolation, and received it with a goal in the 70th minute. It was too little, too late however as the Blue Birds pushed for a 2nd, and Futscher made 4 crucial saves in the last 10 minutes to preserve the win.
