Lady Stangs Cruise in Big Win Over Crusaders.
August 22, 2013By Brad Gough of Bishop Brossart High School
The Lady Stangs scored early and often against the Lady Crusaders of St. Henry on Wednesday, beating them for the first time since 2006. Senior Abby Stadtmiller opened the scoring in only the 2nd minute when Junior winger Nicole Goderwis picked her out at the top of the box with a nice pass. Stadtmiller continued her impressive form be easily putting the ball past the keeper. The Crusaders quickly mounted a counter attack looking to equalize, but Sophomore Keeper Hailee Hundemer was equal to the task. Brossart continued to dominate much of the first half, and scored again through Stadtmiller, as this time she set up fellow Senior Cori Ziegler. Ziegler hit a screamer that dropped under the bar doubling the Lady Stangs lead. Then, 10 minutes later the duo hooked up again as Stadtmiller freed up Ziegler for another goal. Senior Morgan Verst didn't want Stadtmiller and Ziegler to have all the fun, and cut down the line on her left foot before launching an unbelievable upper corner shot from the left flank that easily beat the St. Henry Keeper.
At 4-0 after just 25 minutes of play, the Lady Stangs put it in cruise control and allowed Hundemer to get some action. The Crusaders started pressing for a consolation goal, and forced Hundemer to close out the half with 3 saves.
In the 2nd half it was more of the same with the Lady Stangs looking to kill the game off and the Crusaders pushing for a moral victory. The Lady Stangs had a few near misses, including Senior Megan Dierig hitting the post with Goderwis barely unable to smash home the rebound. It was Hundemer that looked the brightest in the half, however, as she was determined to earn her first Varsity shutout. The Crusaders attempted to drop a free kick in over her shoulder and she made a great save while backpedaling. Then, she had to save from close range and smother the ball as an on-rushing forward kicked the ball just inches from her face. Hundemer saved bravely though and was able to hold the ball to give her back line a breather.
With the win the Lady Stangs move to 2-0 on the season. They will look to continue their high scoring as they take on both East and West Jessamine in a tournament over the weekend.
