January 20, 2013Bishop Brossart High School
The Mustangs of Bishop Brossart held off a pesky Augusta team led by junior guard Brent Bach, who had 39 points, to win the Touchstone Energy Tenth Region All "A" Championship. They improved their record to 17-3 while Augusta falls to 14-6. Senior Justin Saunders led the Mustangs with 28 while junior Alex Trentman had 14 and junior Drew Burns added 12.
Brossart trailed early and often but got within one at the end of the first quarter at 12-11. They took the lead in the second quarter and led by two at intermission. In the second half the Mustangs got some quality play off the bench as three starters picked up at least 4 fouls. They opened up a sizable lead at 57-43 but Augusta kept battling back answering Saunders, Trentman and Burns inside attack with long range bombs by Bach. They closed the Mustang advantage to just four points at 64-60 with 2:04 remaining. However the 'Stangs were up to the task scoring the next 6 to make it 70-60 and making some clutch free throws down the stretch.
They will now play Louisville Collegiate at 1 PM Thursday in Frankfort. Collegiate is 11-6. They defeated Louisville Country Day 81-73 in the Region Finals to advance.
By the luck of the draw, Brossart and Collegiate also played last year when the Titans nipped Brossart 57-52.
