Volleyball season 'rough';districts on horizon

November 3, 2009
By Tyler Baskey of Montgomery Co High School

New MCHS Volleyball Coach Abby Evans faces an up hill battle in her first year at the helm. With the 3rd new coach in four years the lady Indians have been successful in the past. Though the season this year hasn’t been so bright for Coach and the girls. They plan to come closer as a team and work on team leadership.  All of these tasks have to be accomplished by a new coach who has only been developing the team since region and district last season.

I asked Coach Evans How her first year coaching at the high school level has been? “My first year has been quite an experience, after coming from coaching 5th/6th/7th grade levels.  There is so much more to head coaching a group of young adults than just the game of volleyball, I like to help the girls on and off the court. I came to the team last year just helping around when I wasn’t working or taking a college course.  Then towards the end of the season last year I coached the girls varsity during district and region tourneys.  I was very confident due to experience during my four years of volleyball in high school.”

Though the team hadn’t been shining, doesn’t mean that Coach Evans isn’t working.  Like said in her interview “There is more to coaching volleyball than just volleyball.”  Coach also said “leadership is so important, but this years squad isn’t that full of it.  I asked senior Brittany Center what leadership means to the team this year, and how having a 3rd new Coach throughout her years of playing has applied to this years up hill battle.

“Last years leadership was great.  It helped our season record and brought us closer as friends and a team.  But this year the leadership isn’t as strong, us seniors need to step it up and bring the newer players also returning players more experience.  With this being my 3rd coach in my past four years on the team has made things so much harder.  With each different coach comes a totally new ways of coaching us like different workouts, working with players on and off the court, and with new Coach Abby Evans she isn’t as aggressive with us as past coaches.  Overall it’s been just a real tough season for us.”

To improve the lady Indians volleyball team they’ll need more leadership and a better home crowd scene.  Just because its not a main stage sport here in Montgomery county like football and boys/girls basketball doesn’t mean your attendance wont help.  So wear your red white or blue and come support your lady Indians volleyball team.
