MAC Boys Basketball Game of the Week - Delphos St. John's at Versailles

February 7, 2013
Midwest Athletic Conference (MAC)

This week, the Midwest Athletic Conference is back into a log jam for the top spot after St. Henry’s loss to the New Bremen Cardinals last weekend. This Friday, the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays will hope to take over the top of the league standings as they and their 5-1 conference record travel to Darke County to take on the Versailles Tigers who are 14-3 overall and 5-2 in the league. “We are back to controlling our own destiny and that is a good feeling,” St. John’s head coach Aaron Elwer explained. “We can concentrate on what we need to do the next three Fridays to reach one of our goals. Our focus from day one is to continue to get better each day and be playing our best basketball in February and March - this will continue to be our focal point as we continue to move forward.”

Since a loss to St. Henry on January 25, the Blue Jays have won three straight, including a pair of victories last weekend over Marion Local and Lincolnview. While Curtis Geise continues to spear-head the Blue Jay attack, Elwer has been pleased with the recent play of his point guard as well as a host of other contributors on the both ends of the floor. “Our starting point guard, Eric Clark, has been extremely important to our success this season - he keeps getting better and makes good decisions with the basketball.” Elwer praised. “Overall as an offensive unit we are always striving for balance, and this past weekend we accomplished this - as we move forward this will be critical. Defensively has not about individuals for us - it is a total team effort, and we need play great team defense to be successful.”

The Tigers are on a two-game winning streak after downing Coldwater and Franklin Monroe last weekend. At 14-3, Versailles is one of six MAC teams with double-digit wins overall. With two defeats in conference, they are looking to play spoiler from here on out in hopes that losses by some key teams put them in position to tie for the crown. “Versailles is very athletic and very skilled and have several players with the ability to score in a variety of ways,” Elwer emphasized. “They are up tempo and can put a lot of pressure on your defense. We will have to be great in defensive transition, contest shots, and then limit them to one opportunity to be successful Friday night in order to come out on top.”
