MAC Girls Basketball Game of the Week - Coldwater at Minster

February 7, 2013
Midwest Athletic Conference (MAC)

With their loss last Thursday to the Versailles Tigers, Nick Fisher’s Coldwater Cavaliers (12-7, 4-3) also found themselves out of the running for a shot at the Midwest Athletic Conference title. Although hopes for the crown will likely need to wait until next season, Fisher isn’t going to let it dampen his teams’ effort this week against the Minster Wildcats. “I always tell the girls a league title is something we want to strive for but getting ready for tournament excites us more,” reasoned Fisher. “We had a good draw and look forward to the sectionals, but we know Minster will be ready to play on Thursday no matter what the situation may be as far as the league title goes.”

Sarah Kanney continues to lead the Cavs at around 13 points and 3.2 steals per game, while Hannah Bruns is hitting for ten each time out. Bruns and Brooke Welsch also grab seven and six rebounds per game respectively, while Meg Muhlenkamp contributes 3.2 assists and two steals each game. Fisher is also very pleased with production he has received from others on the roster. “Brooke Welsch has really stepped up her game as she is averaging close to eight points per game, but hit 25 points against Fort Recovery, 19 against Lima Shawnee, and eight versus Versailles,” he complimented. “Bridget Dues has also worked her way into the starting lineup, while Ali Dues and Joelle Hemmelgarn are giving us solid minutes off the bench. I like how this young team is continuing to work hard and get better as we approach the end of the regular season and get ready for tournament - it is a long haul and they have kept their focus.”

The Wildcats (11-6, 6-2), remain a game back in the fight for the league championship and will look to start winding down their season on Thursday night with a win. Bridget Geiger paces the Wildcats offensively with just under 14 points per game after hitting almost 50% of her shots from the field. She also pulls down 6.4 rebounds per game, while Kayla Richard continues to be one of the tops in the area in steals. “Nann does a great job of getting her kids ready to play whether it be a big league game or not,” commented Fisher. “They will play aggressive and we look forward to a typical hard-fought MAC game.”
