MAC Girls Basketball Game of the Week - Versailles at Fort Recovery

January 16, 2013
Midwest Athletic Conference (MAC)

As we hit the midpoint of the 2012-13 girls basketball season, only two teams remain unbeaten in the race for the Midwest Athletic Conference championship.  The Versailles Tigers are currently 13-1 overall and 5-0 in the league, while the Fort Recovery Indians sit unblemished at 4-0 in the conference and are 10-2 overall.  Following their battle this Thursday at the Fort Site Fieldhouse, there will be only one at the top of the conference mountain.  “We are a relatively inexperienced team and are constantly trying to get better,” explained Fort Recovery head coach Doug Bihn.  “We have several players who have gotten better, now we just need to transform that into the team getting better.  We always want to be able to compete for the league title - it hasn't been won here in a quite a while.”

The Tigers have been remarkable this season with their only setback coming on December 29 by two points against Fort Loramie.  Since then, the Tigers have dominated three games against Parkway, St. Henry, and Sidney Lehman by an average margin of nearly 40 points per game.  Katie Heckman and Christa Puthoff continue to lead the Orange and Black in scoring by hitting for just over ten points per game, while Puthoff also leads the squad in rebounding with six each time out.  “I really don't think we have had a ‘star’ in each game, but we have girls that have improved their game over the past few games we have played in,” Versailles head coach Jacki Stonebraker commented.  “Our guard play has really stepped up their game and improved the past few games.  This week will be a huge test for us - Ft. Recovery is a very solid team that likes to control the tempo of the game and forces you into careless mistakes with the basketball.  They have a high-pressured defense that creates turnovers, so we must take care of the basketball and contain Lennartz in the half court.”

Fort Recovery has been just as dominating on the hardwood in the past couple of months, led by Tori Lennartz in the scoring and rebounding categories.  “I'm not sure we have any stars, it takes everything and everyone we have to win and accomplish our goals,” Bihn emphasized.  “We need to get better defensively and offensively to compete at the level it takes to win the league.  Versailles is a very deep and big team - they are very athletic, push the ball, and are very good defensively. They are also well-coached and disciplined - we will need to shoot the ball with confidence, handle their pressure, and rebound if we want to come out on top.”

In terms of winning the Midwest Athletic Conference title, Stonebraker points out this league game is another important step in accomplishing one of her team’s goals this season.  “The girls started the year wanting to make a statement in the MAC,” she remarked.  “It's been a while since we have been in the running for a MAC title and the girls made it a goal to be at the top this year.  Our first step was to believe we could do it.  Right now, they are focused and know that they can control their own destiny, just like Ft. Recovery does.”
