St. Henry to celebrate 90 years of Boys Basketball.
January 9, 2013By Nathan Pohlman of Midwest Athletic Conference (MAC)
St. Henry basketball fans past and present will want to make it a point to be in town this weekend, as the program commemorates its 90th anniversary. First launched prior to the 1923-24 season, the St. Henry basketball program has established itself as one of Ohio’s all-time best with close to 1300 wins through nine decades. With four state championships to its credit, the program has also been blessed with countless milestone campaigns, dominating players, memorable games, and consistent yearly success. Festivities will tip off on Friday when the Redskins host the Versailles Tigers in a pivotal Midwest Athletic Conference battle at the middle school gymnasium with the junior varsity contest beginning at 6:30. Immediately following the games, fans are invited to hop around town to a variety of locations to reminisce and celebrate. St. Henry’s 1970team – the program’s first regular season unbeaten team will join the 1979 state champions for their reception at Fish-Mo’s on the west end of town. The 1990 and 1991 state champion squads will set up camp on the east side of town at 3-G’s, while the state runners-up team from 2000 will bond with the 2004 state champions while greeting friends, fans, and family at the St. Henry Nite Club.
On Saturday evening, the Redskins’ junior varsity contest with Anna has been moved to 5:30 to accommodate festivities. At halftime of the varsity game with the Rockets, all former St. Henry basketball players and coaches will be speciallyrecognized, while one lucky fan will have the opportunity to drain a half court shot and win a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe valued at $20,000.00 from Select Motors in Celina. The car will be parked at the front entrance of the school on Friday and Saturday night during the games. Tickets will be sold 1 for $1, 6 for $5, and 20 for $10. The shooter will be awarded one shot and if they make it, they win the car, while a miss will earn them a yet-to-be-determined amount of cash. Tickets will be available during the game on Friday and up to the start of the varsity game on Saturday. Following the game, friends, fans, and family are invited to the St. Henry Legion where the night will carry on with door prizes, videos, guest speakers, and plenty of story telling.
Tickets for this event are $10.00 and there is a limited supply remaining. If you are interested in purchasing tickets, please contact Al Summers at firstname.lastname@example.org, otherwise they will be sold at both basketball games this weekend at the 50/50 ticket table. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door at the legion. All proceeds from the event will go to the St. Henry Athletic Boosters.
