On Wednesday, October 12, Cass Midway’s cross country athletes participated in the Fifth Annual Sherwood Invitational. The races were run on the 5000 meter course on the campus of Sherwood High School in Creighton, MO.
Cass Midway won the girls’ varsity team title at Sherwood by a score of 25 to 32 over Drexel. Only Midway and Drexel ran full varsity girls’ teams
Mackenzie Weis ran a first place time of 18:16 on the Sherwood 5000 meter course to lead Midway to the team title. Josie Riggs was second in a time of 20:11. Kayla Robinson was seventh in a time of 21:25.
Dee Stark was ninth in a time of 21:45. Hannah Mills was eleventh in a time of 22:21. Caitlin Chaffin ran a thirteenth place time of 23:02, and Caroline Bynum ran a fifteenth place time of 23:10.
Holden won the varsity boys’ team title with a score of 30. Summit Christian Academy was second with a team score of 46. Cole Camp was third with a team score of 95. Cass Midway placed fifth with a team score of 104.
Conor Hayes was the first Viking to cross the finish line, running the Sherwood 5000 meter course in a fourteenth place time of 18:07. Jackson Eberle was twenty-sixth in a time of 19:21.
Bailey Scholl ran a thirty-sixth place time of 20:12. Cameron Willey was thirty-ninth in a time of 20:36. Justin Fielder was forty-fourth in a time of 21:15.
Due to the rapidly progressing storms and lightning in the Sherwood area at the time of the races, the JV races were shortened to 2500 meters.
Allie Hayes won the JV girls’ race in a time of 11:22. Zoe Eberle was fourth in a time of 12:42. Tessa Mills ran a sixth place time of 13:35.
In the JV boys’ race, Josh Farris was third in a time of 10:04. Chris Chandler was fourth in a time of 10:32. Jesse Bauerle was sixth in a time of 11:20.
“The varsity course was short by 250 to 400 meters,” said Midway head coach Doug Carder. “But, this time of year it’s not so much about times as it is about placing.”
Coach Carder continued, “The Drexel girls ran really well at Sherwood. Coach (Adrianne) Lane is doing a great job with the team. Our team is quality, and the Kingsville and Drexel girls’ teams are both quality. We’ll have our hands full and then some at districts.”
“Our guys raced the way they needed to at Sherwood to position ourselves for a push at district time,” added Coach Carder. “We did it the right way.”
The cross country Vikings and Lady Vikings will race at the West Platte Invitational on Saturday, October 15. The meet is contested on the 5000 meter course at Platte Ridge Park.
