Midway Boys Take Second in Archie Tourney; Win Bob Bure Sportsmanship Award

The Archie Whirlwinds hosted the 84th annual Archie Basketball tournament Jan. 27-31, 2014. The championship games were postponed due to weather and were played on Saturday, February 8. The Midway Viking boys’ basketball team defeated the Archie Whirlwinds and the Rich Hill Tigers in the first and second rounds of the tournament, leaving the Vikings to battle with the Drexel Bobcats in the championship game. This was only the 8th time the Midway Viking boys have appeared in the championship game of the Archie tournament; the Vikings fell to the Bobcats 65-48. Despite the Vikings’ loss, they were awarded the 2014 Bob Bure Sportsmanship Award and took home the traveling trophy.
On January 28 the Midway Vikings defeated the Archie Whirlwinds 34-18. The Vikings’ leading scorer was Clay Dahman with 11 points, followed by Mason Irvin with 8 points, Tanner Yahnig with 6 points, Tyler Wright with 4 points, Bobby Zielinski with 3 points, and Nate Fischer with 2 points. The Vikings’ leading rebounder was Mason Irvin with 14 rebounds, followed by Clay Dahman and Tanner Yahnig with 6 rebounds, Bobby Zielinski with 5 rebounds, Nate Fischer with 4 rebounds, and Chris Chandler and Tyler Wright with 3 rebounds.
In the semi-final round on January 30, the Midway Vikings defeated the Rich Hill Tigers 59-43 in an excellent effort on the part of the Vikings. The Vikings’ leading scorer was Tyler Wright with 15 points, followed by Clay Dahman with 11 points, Mason Irvin with 10 points, Tanner Yahnig with 9 points, Nate Fischer with 7 points, Bobby Zielinski with 5 points, and Conor Hayes with 2 points. The Vikings’ leading rebounder was Tyler Wright with 9 rebounds, followed by Clay Dahman with 8 rebounds, Mason Irvin with 7 rebounds, Nate Fischer with 5 rebounds, and Bobby Zielinski with 2 rebounds.
Saturday, February 8, the Midway Vikings were defeated by the Drexel Bobcats in the Archie tournament championship. The final score of the game was 65-48. The Vikings’ leading scorer was Clay Dahman with 16 points, followed by Tyler Wright with 15 points, Tanner Yahnig and Nate Fischer with 4 points, Conor Hayes with 3 points, and Michael O’Brien, Mason Irvin, and Bobby Zielinski each with 2 points.
Clay Dahman was the Midway player selected to the 2014 All-Tournament team. Other selections were Adrian-Gage Steen, Butler-Zach Burch, Rich Hill-Jacob Thompson, Midway-Clay Dahman, Drexel-Brandon Thomas and Javyn Johnston.
