Lady Vikings: District CHAMPS!
By Jodi Rhodes
The Midway Lady Vikings brought home the District 13 championship last night for the third year in a row, after thoroughly beating first seed KC Lutheran in two games, 25-13 and 25-20. KC Lutheran had taken two different wins against the Vikings, once in regular season and once in the Midway Tournament. That did not discourage the Vikings: “We were preparing ourselves for last night’s game all day yesterday, and our intensity was at an all-time high! I don’t think we have ever wanted something so much as we wanted to beat KC Lutheran, and the victory was sweeter than ever!” said senior setter Kasey Roberson.
Senior middle hitter Miranda Dahman said, “I was so proud of our team last night. We all knew that we could do it, and it was amazing for us to prove it to ourselves and all the other teams out there.”
The Lady Vikings had a team total of 17 kills against Lutheran. Megan O’Brien led the team with 4 kills, followed by Jessica Owens, Emily Aksamit and Miranda Dahman with 3 kills each. Laine Mills had 2 kills and Mariah Keeney and Jodi Rhodes had one kill.
Midway had an astounding serving night. The team was 100% with 48 serves. Raelynn Goddard had a team high of 16 serves with 3 aces. Megan O’Brien was not too far behind with 10 serves, Jessica Owens served 7, and Miranda Dahman served 6. Jodi Rhodes had 5 serves and Kasey Roberson had 4 serves.
There were a total of 11 successful blocks performed by the Vikings. Miranda Dahman had 6 total blocks; 3 solo and 3 assisted. Laine Mills contributed with 5 total blocks; 3 assisted and 2 solo. Emily Aksamit had 2 assisted blocks and Mariah Keeney had 2 blocks; 1 solo and 1 assisted. Megan O’Brien had 1 assisted block as well.
The Vikings’ defense was very strong all night. There were 46 digs by the girls. Megan O’Brien and Jodi Rhodes both led the team with 9 total digs, closely followed by Raelynn Goddard with 8 total digs. Jessica Owens had 5 digs, Kasey Roberson and Miranda Dahman each had 4 digs, and Mariah Keeney and Emily Aksamit had 3 digs. Laine Mills had 1 dig.
There were 15 total assists. Jodi Rhodes had 8 assists followed by Kasey Roberson with 6 assists and Emily Aksamit with 1 assist.
The Vikings had a total of 31 serve receive passes. Raelynn Goddard had 15 passes, Miranda Dahman had 6 and Megan O’Brien had 5. Mariah Keeney had 3 passes and Emily Aksamit passed 2.
“A District Championship is something every team works for and the girls brought their A game to take home the title. Lutheran beat us twice during the season, but we were able to get the win when it counted the most. We packed the Dome with Purple and our fans made that Dome Rock! Truly blessed to be a Viking,” said Coach C.J. Chamberlin.
The Lady Vikings will travel to Mound City on Saturday, November 2, to face Mound City in the first game of Sectionals at 2:30 p.m.
