By Raelynn Goddard and Megan O’Brien
The Lady Vikings set the bar high with their first conference win September 17 at Archie. The Junior High A Team set the standard with a 25-06 and 25-14 win, JV continued the winning streak with 25-15 and 25-23 scores, and Varsity finished off the night with a 25-15, 25-14 win, making their record 5-0.
The Varsity team had a solid serving night making 46/47. Raelynn Goddard was 18/18, Megan O’Brien and Jessica Owens were 6/6, Miranda Dahman was 5/5, Kasey Roberson was 4/4, Mariah Keeney and Emily Akasamit were both 1/1, and Jodi Rhodes was 5/6.
The Viking offense dominated with a total of 72 attacking attempts. Miranda Dahman led the team with 7 kills; close behind was Emily Akasamit with 6, Megan O’Brien and Laine Mills with 4, Jessica Owens and Jodi Rhodes with 2, and Mariah Keeney contributed 1 kill for a team total of 26 kills.
The offensive success would not have been possible without the setters. Jodi Rhodes had 14 assists, Kasey Roberson had 6, Mariah Keeney had 2, and Megan O’Brien had 1.
Senior Miranda Dahman said, “It was really awesome to win our first conference game. We really bonded as a team and executed offensively.”
Defense was yet another key for the Vikings with 38 team digs: Raelynn Goddard had 10, Miranda Dahman had 7, Megan O’Brien and Emily Aksamit had 6, Jessica Owens had 3, Devyn Worthley and Kasey Roberson had 2, and Jodi Rhodes and Allie Geivett each had 1.
Dahman led the team with 3 blocks; Akasamit and Keeney each had 1.
Coach C.J. Chamberlin said, "I thought the girls played well in their first conference game of the season. We had the return of Laine Mills tonight, and we were able to run the original lineup we had planned at the beginning of the season. We struggled a little bit with our passing tonight as Archie served us tough, which slowed down our offense a little bit. But we were able to regroup and come away with a win. It was nice to walk away with victories from all three of our teams."
Thursday, Sept. 20, the Varsity Lady Vikings travel to Blue Ridge Christian for a 6 o’clock game.
Saturday, Sept. 22, the Varsity will compete in the Knob Noster Tournament. The lady Vikings begin play at 8 a.m. vs. Clinton and later face Northwest and Harrisonville in pool play.
The JV will compete in the Archie JV Tourney the same day, playing at 8 a.m. vs. Adrian. Later in the day they will face Pleasant Hill and KC Lutheran in pool play, which will determine bracket advancements.
The junior high A team, coached by Jennifer Dean and Mindy Wilkins, hit their season opener ready to play and beat Archie in two games, 25-6 and 25-14.
The junior high A team had a great serving night: Jade Lambertz served 8/8, Lexi Gunnels 5/5, Brielee Hewitt 4/4, Jenna Robinson 2/2, Makenna Irvin 11/12, Maddie Yahnig 9/10, and Bailey Dean 2/3.
