2013 Viking Football Preview

The Cass Midway Vikings improved their 2012 season (9-3) from their 2011 season (7-4), but the Vikings fell short of their own expectations.
Ready to jump back and improve once again, head coach Larry Burchett said, “Our strengths will be our experience, speed, size, and numbers.” Preparing for his twenty-fifth football season as head coach, he is also joined by previous Viking football players and long-term assistants Brett Burchett, Jim Riggs, Chad Dean, and Bryan Stahl.
Graduated 2012-2013 Vikings include Dylan Wise, Christopher Bynum, Christian Cromer, Brandon Hayden, Sean DeFeo, Trevor Thompson, Michael Oakes, and Mitchell Southard. Only Christian Cromer has continued his football career as a lineman at Missouri Valley.
The 2013 football season will mark the fifty-second edition of purple/white Viking football pride. There are a total of 45 Viking football players, consisting of 11 seniors, 9 juniors, 13 sophomores and 12 freshmen. Nine offensive players and nine defensive players will be returning on the starting lineup yet again.
“We will run multiple sets on offense,” said Coach Burchett. The backfield will consist of senior QB Peyton Semsch (6’1, 195 lbs), senior RB Bobby Zielinski (5’10, 165 lbs.), junior RB Clay Dahman (6’2, 195 lbs.) junior WR Tanner Yahnig (5’8, 150 lbs.), and sophomore WR Luke Boyer (5’11, 160 lbs.). The line will consist of multiple combinations of players for specific play types. The offensive line will consist of senior Mason Irvin (6’3, 220 lbs.), senior Tyler Greer (6’1, 240 lbs.), senior Joey Beller (6’0, 210), senior Eli Suarez (6’1, 200), senior George Funk (6’0, 270), junior Kessler Woods (5’11, 285), junior Wyatt Mabary (5’7, 120), and sophomore Kobe Burchett (5’9, 180). Last year’s offensive All-Conference selections include 1st team: Bobby Zielinski, Joey Beller, and Clay Dahman, 2nd team, Tyler Greer, and Peyton Semsch (K); Honorable Mention: Peyton Semsch (QB, P).
“Our base defense front will be 4-3,” said Coach Burchett. “We will need to stay focused and avoid injury to challenge the best.” The backfield will consist of LB Peyton Semsch, LB Joey Beller, DB Bobby Zielinski, senior DB Zeb Love (6’1, 160 lbs.), senior DB Shane White (5’9, 160), LB Tanner Yahnig, junior DB Tyler Wright (6’2, 180 lbs.), and DB Luke Boyer. The defensive line will consist of Tyler Greer, George Funk, Kessler Woods, Clay Dahman, Jake Lambertz (jr, 5’9, 170), and Kobe Burchett . Last year’s defensive All-Conference selections include 1st team: Bobby Zielinski, Joey Beller, and Clay Dahman; Honorable Mention: Peyton Semsch, Zeb Love, and Jake Lambertz.
The Vikings will play in a jamboree at Orrick this Friday night (8/23) at 7 p.m. against Orrick, Polo, and Lone Jack. The following Friday (8/30) will be the Viking’s first game on the road against the Osceola Indians. Kickoff time is 7 p.m. This year’s season will have the same setup as the previous year; every game counts for a seeding in the district tournament.
