Knights Softball Splits with #10 Darton

February 22, 2013
By James Hagler, Jr of MIDDLE GEORGIA STATE COLLEGE

On Thursday afternoon, the Middle Georgia State College Knights hosted the number 10 Darton Cavaliers at Warrior Field.  The Cavaliers won the first game 7-1 scoring one run each in the first and fifth innings while putting up five runs in the second.  Alyssa Amerson started the game for the Knights giving up six earned runs before being relieved with two outs in the second by Katie Turner who finished the game giving up only three hits the rest of the way.  Thought they threatened several times, the lone run for the Knights came on a single by Jessica Cook in the second inning plating Julie Bradley who had a leadoff single in the inning.

Game 2 saw a different story for the Knights with Turner starting the game, Kayla Bawkin got her out of trouble in the first throwing home to Bradley to apply the tag on the runner and ending the threat in the first inning by the Cavaliers.  Both teams threatened until the bottom of the third when Bawkin singled up the middle with runners on second and third to put the Knights up 2-0.  After an error and another single, Cook came to the plate with the bases loaded and drove a ball deep to left field for a grand slam and a 6-0 lead for the Knights.  Darton got two runs in the fifth after two errors and a walk allowed runners to reach base and score on a couple of groundouts.  The Knights answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth when Keri Tompkins hit a homerun to left field to drive in Bradley and make the score 8-2.  After getting out of a bases loaded jam with a strikeout in the sixth, Turner found herself in trouble with a hit and two walks loaded the bases in the top of the seventh.  A hit batter and fielder’s choice drove in runs for the Cavaliers before a groundout and a single ended the game.

The Knights are scheduled to play Friday at South Georgia College pending the weather while the next home game is March 6 at Warrior Field.  You can keep up with the team at www.ihigh.com/mgsknights or on Facebook and Twitter.
