Knights go 2-1 in weekend tournament at Chipola
February 17, 2013By James Hagler, Jr of MIDDLE GEORGIA STATE COLLEGE
The Knights take 2 of 3 in Marianna, FL over the Weekend, sweeping a double header over #20 Chipola 1-0 and defeating #6 San Jacinto 6-2 in the nightcap. The 14th ranked Knights dropped game 3 to Chipola on Saturday 1-2.
Game one saw starter Alex Roberts run his season record to 2-0 throwing 6 strong shutout innings. Roberts turned the mound duties over to Blake Shouse in the seventh, where Shouse recorded a perfect 7th for his second save of the young season. For the second straight weekend the Knights scored in the 1st inning and that would be all that was needed for the win. Cody Lanford led off the game with a single , stole second , moved to 3rd on an infield single by Blake Shouse and scored on a Javier Reynoso sacrifice fly to deep left.
Game two saw two of the Nation’s most storied programs square off. Javier Reynoso threw 5 solid innings allowing 2 unearned runs while striking out 9 Gator batters. Justin Flores took over on the mound in the 6th to earn his 1st colligate win, throwing 4 scoreless innings and striking out a season high 10 batters along the way. The Knights broke open a 2-2 tie in the 6th with 4 runs. After a Trae Wilson walk and a San Jac error the Knights loaded the bases with no outs on a Jake Wright walk. Kent Rollins broke the tie with a sac fly. Cole Thompson scored on a second San Jac error and the final two runs scored on an Adam Eggnatz single. Cody Lanford collected two doubles for the game while Eggnatz collected 3 RBI’s.
Game three was a different story for the Knights as they could not muster enough offense to overcome Chipola. Tyler Graham picked up the tough loss on the mound. Chipola scored two in the 1st on a triple down the right field line. That would prove to be enough as the Knights could only score 1 in the seventh. With runners on 1st and 2nd Blake Shouse grounded into the game ending double play to end the Knights rally.
The Knights return to action next Friday and Saturday in Pensacola, FL where the Knights take on Pensacola Community College. The Knights will return home for a weekend series on March 1st and 2nd.
