Middle Georgia State’s softball team opened the season with a split of the doubleheader with ABAC on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights lost the first game 2-1 with the one run coming off the bat of Kayla Bawkin in the bottom of the 4th with a solo homerun to straight away center and ended up 2-3 in the game adding a single in the 6th. Katie Turner took the loss pitching seven strong innings, striking out seven and walking two but two unearned runs provided the runs in the 5th and 7th innings for the Stallions.
The second game started out with great pitching and defense for both teams and remained scoreless until the bottom of the 3rd when an error by the Stallions allowed two runs to score providing a 2-0 lead for the Knights. The Knights added a run in the 4th on an RBI single by Alyssa Amerson and two more in the 5th on a homerun to right-center by Bawkin taking the lead to 5-0 going into the bottom of the 6th. Adele Harrison led off the 6th with a single and Bawkin came to the plate with two outs and sent her third homerun of the day over the scoreboard in right field to make it 7-0. The game ended with the next batter Keri Tompkins hitting a solo shot to center field to give the Knights the win with the mercy rule.
