Home » Newspaper NewsA Trip To College By: Danielle VancleveNovember 16, 2009 Menifee County High SchoolSophomores in the Upward Bound program at Menifee County High School went to college. Randy Smith, Lois Spears, Kathryn Martin, Franklin Stidham, and Tresa Wells went to Morehead State University for a day. All of the students meet in the auditorium before beginning there day. There were several speakers that welcomed the students. After the assembly in the auditorium the students went into breakout sessions. There were two breakout sessions that the students went to. The first class was AHEC. AHEC stands for American Health Educational Center. The students learned about different opportunities that were available such as camps and clubs. The second breakout session was for KHEAA. The KHEAA class talked about KHEAA money and taking all of the available scholarship possibilities. Lois Spears said, "I thought this trip was a great experience and I really learned a lot." After eating a lunch of hotdogs and chips, there was a pep rally. During the pep rally two MSU basketball players spoke to the students. Kenneth and James told the students about their past. Kenneth told about how he was the first one in his family to go to college. James talked about where he grew up and about the drug dealers and gangs where he used to live. Each of the students got "freebies". The staff that was there threw hats, bags, Frisbees and other items out to the students. Tresa Wells said that her favorite part of the day was the rally at the end. Lois Spears even got up in front of the staff and students and hula hooped for her prize, a light up hula hoop. The students received pep talks, educational information, and "freebies" to encourage them to attend college
