R-2 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL SEASON STARTS WITH R-2 TOURNEY

The Montgomery County R-2 Lady Wildcats basketball got started last week as R-2 played 3 games in the Montgomery County R-2 Tournament.  The Lady Wildcats lost their first two games before picking up their first win of the season.  On Monday, November 28, they lost to Clopton 37-24.  On Wednesday, November 30, they lost to Fulton 41-38.  On Friday, December 2, they defeated Wellsville-Middletown 46-25.

The Lady Wildcats got off to a slow start in the Clopton game, as they fell behind 9-1 by the end of the first quarter.  After Clopton scored the first basket of the second quarter to lead 11-1, R-2 finally got things going on offense outscoring Clopton 8-0 over the next four minutes to close the gap to 11-9.  However, Clopton outscored R-2 12-2 in the last 3½ minutes of the first half to lead 23-11 at halftime.

Defense was the name of the game in the second half as neither team was able to score many points.  Clopton outscored the Lady Wildcats 7-6 in the third quarter to make the score 30-17.  In the fourth quarter both teams scored 7 points each, which gave Clopton a 37-24 victory.

Brandy Reagan led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 8 points (3 field goals/FGs and 2 free throws/FTs).  She was followed in the scoring by Rachel Miller, Amy Muchow, and Danielle Schmidt with 4 points each (Miller and Muchow 1 FG/2 FTs each; Schmidt 4 FTs), and Mackenzie Yager and Makayla Yager with 2 points each (each of them had 1 FG).  Courtney Thomas also played, but did not score.

In the Fulton game the Lady Wildcats were able to get off a quick start as Muchow hit two 3-point shots and Reagan added 4 points and Thomas added 2 points to give R-2 a 12-6 lead.  The teams played almost even in the second quarter as Fulton outscored R-2 12-11 to close the gap to 23-18 at halftime.

Neither team could get things going offensively in the third quarter as they each scored only 5 points, which made the score 28-23 heading into the fourth quarter.  Both offenses got going again in the fourth quarter, but through the first 6 minutes of the quarter Fulton outscored R-2 12-7 to tie the game at 35-35.  Fulton continued to outscore R-2 6-3 in the final two minutes and won the game 41-38.

Miller led R-2 in scoring with 11 points (5 FGs/1 FT).  She was followed in the scoring by Reagan with 8 points (4 FGs), Muchow with 7 points (2 3-point FGs/1FT), Thomas and Makayla Yager with 5 points each (Thomas 2 FGs/1 FT and Yager 1 FG/3 FTs), Schmidt with 2 points (2 FTs).  Mackenzie Yager also played, but did not score.

On Friday, against Wellsville-Middletown, the Lady Wildcats gradually built a lead in the first half and then easily pulled away in the second half.  R-2 led at the end of the first quarter 9-6, and then outscored W-M 8-4 in the second quarter to lead 17-10 at halftime.
