LADY WILDCATS’ 2014 SOFTBALL SEASON STARTS THIS SATURDAY
IN NEW HAVEN TOURNAMENT
The Montgomery County R-2 Lady Wildcats’ Softball team begins their 2014 season with 3 games this Saturday, August 23, in the New Haven Tournament. The first game is at 11:00 a.m., against Hancock. The second game is at 2:00 p.m., against either St. James or Hermann. The time of their third game and their opponent will be determined by the results of their first 2 games.
Next week the Lady Wildcats will play 2 games. On Tuesday, August 26 they will host Hermann at the Montgomery County R-2 Softball Complex. The game starts at 5:00 p.m. Fans attending the game need to park in the new parking lot located northeast of the R-2 Middle School.
Then on Thursday, August 28, the Lady Wildcats will play their first Eastern Missouri (EMO) Conference game of the season. They will play at Silex, but the time for this game was not listed on the schedule (probably at 5:00 p.m. – call the school for the correct time).
Trent Crenshaw is the Head Coach for the Lady Wildcats. This is his second year as the Lady Wildcats’ Head Coach. He is assisted again this year by Audra Heimer, whom Coach Crenshaw says “is one of the best assistant coaches I have been around in my 9 years of coaching.”
Under Crenshaw’s leadership, the Lady Wildcats had one of the most successful seasons in the history of the program (started in the late 1980s), finishing with a record of 12 wins and 11 losses (only the second or third time in which the Lady Wildcats have had a winning record).
In addition they won a trophy in each of tournaments they played in last season, including: the 2nd Place trophy in the Missouri Class 2 District 11 Tournament (only the second time in the history of the program); the 2nd Place trophy in their own tournament – the Wildcat Fall Classic (again, only the second time in the history of the program); and the 3rd Place trophy in the New Haven Tournament (the first time they have played in this tournament).
This year’s team has 12 players, including: Seniors Miah Klekamp, and Shelby Miles; Juniors Abby Bartlett, Taylor Lauer, Cayleigh Lively; Sophomore Corryn Hill; and Freshmen Hope Birkner, Jordan Fischer, Anna Ford, Sydney Queathem, Arie Roden, and Bri Steele.
The Lady Wildcats have 5 returning players (all starters) from last year’s team including Klekamp, Miles, Lauer, Lively and Hill. Hill earned 1st Team EMO All-Conference honors, and she and Miles both earned Missouri District 11 All-Tournament Team honors last season.
Coach Crenshaw made the following comments about the team and the upcoming season: “We should be better on offense this season, as we have several girls who swing the bat well. However, we are a very young team, as 6 of our 12 players are Freshmen.
He continued by stating, “We do have high expectations for the season. However, the key component to this season is the “maturity” process throughout the season. There will be “growing pains” throughout the season, but staying positive and out-working our opponents will lead us to the goals we wish to achieve, as we want to be playing our best ball at the end of the season.”
The Lady Wildcats and Coach Crenshaw and Coach Heimer hope you will be able to attend the games and support the girls, as they work hard to have a successful 2014 season.
