2014 R-2 FOOTBALL WILDCATS’ SEASON STARTS THIS FRIDAY

WITH HOME GAME AGAINST HERMANN

The Montgomery County R-2 Wildcats’ Football team starts the 2014 season this Friday, August 22, as they host the Hermann Bearcats.  The game will start at 7:00 p.m.

If it seems to you that the football season is starting sooner this year, you are absolutely correct.  Because of an adjustment made in the State Playoff system, an extra week had to be added to the season in order for the State Championship games to be played during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend (as has always been done in Missouri).

Another change to the Wildcats and the Eastern Missouri (EMO) Conference schedules for the 2014 season is the addition of 2 teams to the football conference.  Mark Twain (which has always been in the Clarence Cannon Conference), and South Callaway (which was an independent team last season) have joined the EMO Conference.  South Callaway will only be in the EMO Conference for football.  This means there will be 8 teams in the conference, the most football teams ever to play in the EMO Conference.

Once again, John Klekamp is the R-2 Head Coach.  This is his fifth year as the Wildcats’ Head Coach.  His 4-year record at Montgomery County R-2 is 23 wins and 19 losses, including a 9-2 record last season.  His assistant coaches include Justin Graves, Josh Pierce, Nick Schubert, Darryl Rhoads, Joe Klekamp, Don Moultrie, and Sam Turner.

There are 44 young men listed on the Wildcats 2014 roster, including 8 Seniors, 18 Juniors, 8 Sophomores and 10 Freshmen.  This number could change before the first game, but currently the players by class are as follows:

Seniors – Tanner Cobb, Jacob Davenport, Jack Ecton, Beck Holtman, Kyle Kroll, Travis Oden, George Rodebaugh, and Jacob Scarlet.

Juniors – Lafe Arens, Logan Begeman, Jesse Esslinger, Danny Eveland, Nick Galarza, Nathan Hardcastle, Nathan Hess, Trevor Hollaway, Taylor Lewis, David Lobb, Will Lorson, Joseph McCormick, Dylan Miller, Andy Milner, Brayden Rajchart, Joe Schlueter, Nathan Strange, and Misael Vazquez-Perez.

Sophomores – Koben Callaway, Hasten Camp, Mark Ellington, Hunter Graf, Jacob Harlan, Skyler Henson, Anthony Martin, and Brendan Their.

Freshmen – Tim Hall, Chris Harrison, Corey Kroll, Aubrey Nelson, Dustin Rajchart, A.J. Schmidt, Seth Shamp, John Shaw, Wyatt Walton, and Bobby Zwilling.

The Wildcats lost 10 starters on defense and 9 starters on offense to graduation from the 2013 team.  That team won the EMO Conference Championship and finished with an overall record of 9 wins and 2 losses.  As a result, the Wildcats, Coach Klekamp and his staff will have a lot of questions about this year’s team, which will only be answered as the 2014 season progresses.

The returning starters for the Wildcats include Seniors Jacob Davenport and Jack Ecton (Offensive Linemen), and Kyle Kroll (Defensive Back).  Coach Klekamp also has 8 returning lettermen from last year’s team, 5 of which started at least one Varsity game in 2013.

In his comments concerning the upcoming season, Coach Klekamp stated the following:

“We obviously have limited experience on this year’s team.  However, we do have important experience at the quarterback position, as Kyle Kroll started multiple games as the quarterback last season, and will be a good leader for us this season.  We also have 3 players that played significant roles on our offensive line (Davenport, Ecton, and Begeman).

A big plus we have for this year’s team is an experienced coaching staff.  The members of this staff have been together for at least 3 years.  The program has the consistency that it hasn’t had in the recent past.  This experience will only help the staff to put the players in the best opportunities to be successful.”

He also shared the following thoughts concerning the keys to success for this season:  “The key to success for this team will be based solely on the players’ efforts to get better every day.  We will have to work hard to play good defense.  Our coaching staff feels that the level of talent is here for the team to be successful, but the team will only reach its full potential if the players give their best at all times this season.”

The Wildcat players and coaches hope you will attend this Friday’s game against Hermann (and all of the games) to support the Wildcats and cheer them on to victory.  Best wishes to the players and coaching staff for a successful 2014 season.
