MONTGOMERY COUNTY R-2 ACADEMIC BOWL TEAM

WINS 5TH EMO CONFERENCE TITLE

The Montgomery County R-2 Wildcat Academic Bowl Team competed in the East Missouri (EMO) Conference tournament last Tuesday, March 11.  They entered the tournament with a perfect 9-0 record against EMO Conference opponents.  They kept that perfect conference record by winning all of their games in the tournament.

The members of the Wildcat team included Seniors Zakk Bartlett, Brandon Bethel, Emily Johnson, Jessie Paddon, Lukas Poindexter, and Victoria Quinones, and Junior Jamison Rucker.  The team is coached by Ben Creech, who also teaches Social Studies at the High School.

Montgomery County started the tournament with three Preliminary Games, in which the Wildcats defeated Bowling Green, Silex, and North Callaway. This gave the team the number one seed of the four teams that qualified for the tournament semifinals, consisting of single-elimination games.

In the Semifinal Game, Montgomery County faced Bowling Green (#4 seed) again, and defeated BG by the score of 360-180. The Wildcats then faced cross-county rival Wellsville-Middletown in the Championship Game.

The Wildcats were very successful in answering the questions and defeated W-M by the score of 400-200 to win the EMO Conference title. Montgomery County finished with a perfect 14-0 record against conference teams, and earned the 5th Conference Championship by a Wildcats team.

Rucker finished with the highest individual point totally of everyone in the tournament and earned All-Tournament Team honors.  Bartlett also earned All-Tournament Team honors, as he finished with the 4th highest individual point total.

The season is not finished for the Wildcats.  The team will compete in the New Haven Tournament on March 29/Saturday, and then will compete with 7 other teams in the Missouri Class 3 District 7 Tournament at Hallsville on April 12/Satuday.  The seeding for the District Tournament has not been determined yet.

“Congratulations” to the Wildcats on winning the EMO Conference Championship.  Also, “Best Wishes” as you compete in the New Haven Tournament, and then the District 7 Tournament (and hopefully on to the State Tournament)!
