MS BBALL REPORT (VF/NH) BY ALAN BRAKE

January 13, 2014
Montgomery County High School

8TH BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM WINS 1ST 2 GAMES OF 2014;

HAVE NOW WON 11 CONSECUTIVE GAMES

The Montgomery County R-2 Wildcats 8th Grade Boys’ Basketball team has played 2 games after the Christmas/New Year’s holiday break and won both of them.  On January 3, a Friday, they traveled to New Haven and won 45-6.  Then last Friday, January 10, they hosted Van-Far and won an exciting game 46-42.

With these wins the 8th Graders now have an 11-game winning streak, and their record is 11 wins and 1 loss.  Their only loss was a 4-point loss to Mexico (who has not lost a game last year or this year) in the first game of the season.

NEW HAVEN GAME

The 8th Graders faced a team that was a combination of 8th and 7th Graders, as New Haven has only 4 8th Graders playing this year.  The Wildcats got control of this game early and never looked back.  They outscored NH 12-2 in the first quarter; 18-0 in the second quarter; 9-2 in the third quarter; and 6-2 in the fourth quarter to win the game 45-6.

Tim Hall led the Wildcats in scoring in this game with 16 points (7 field goals/FGs, and 2 of 3 free throws/FTs).  He was followed in the scoring by Cole Curry and Skyler Hutcheson with 8 points each (each made 4 FGs); Aubrey Nelson with 7 points (2 FGs/1 3-pointer); Chris Harrison with 4 points (2 FGs); and John Shaw with 2 points (1 FG).  Ethan Beaver, Adam Jordan, Corey Kroll, Mercury Murray, and Tucker Walls also played in this game, but did not score.

VAN-FAR GAME

In facing Van-Far the 8th Graders were playing another team that is having a successful season, as VF came into this game with a 10-1 record of its own.  Needless to say it was a very competitive and exciting Middle School game.

Montgomery County was able to get the upper hand in this game, as they outscored VF 13-9 in the first quarter.  The Wildcats extended their lead to 8 points by halftime, as they again outscored VF 13-9 to lead 26-18 at halftime.

The teams played evenly in the third quarter, as each team scored 10 points to give the Wildcats a 36-28 lead going into the fourth quarter.  VF started making a comeback in the last quarter, as they outscored the Wildcats 9-1 in the first 3 minutes of the quarter (6-minute quarters) to tie the score at 37-37.

The Wildcats then responded with a field goal, and a 3-pointer to take a 42-37 lead.  However, VF came right back and outscored the Wildcats 5-1 to close the score to 43-42.  Fortunately, in the last minute of the game the Wildcats scored the last 3 points of the game, and held on to win 46-42.

Kroll led the Wildcats in scoring in this game with 20 points (8 FGs/1 3-pointer/1 of 3 FTs).  He was followed in the scoring by Nelson with 13 points (5 FGs/1 3-pointer); Curry with 6 points (2 FGs/2 of 4 FTs); Hutcheson with 5 points (2 FGs/1 of 1 FTs); and Hall with 2 points (2 of 4 FTs); Shaw and Harrison also played in this game, but did not score.

The 8th Graders’ season comes to an end this week with 3 games.  They played their first game on Monday, January 13, at Warrenton.  This game is a make up game, for the game originally scheduled for last Thursday, January 9.  They play another make up game this Thursday, January 16, against Wright City.  This game had been scheduled for last Tuesday, January 7.  They finish the season with a regularly scheduled game this Friday, January 17, against Winfield.

Thursday’s game will be played at the Montgomery City Elementary Gym, and will start around 6:45 p.m. (after the 7th Grade game).  Friday’s game will be played at the Montgomery County R-2 High School Gym, and will start around 7:15 p.m. (after the 7th Grade game).

Congratulations to the 8th Graders on their 11-game winning streak!  Best wishes on your efforts to win your last 3 games of the 2013-14 season.
