BASKETBALL WILDCATS’ DEFEAT SOUTH CALLAWAY 85-75;
RECORD IMPROVES TO 5-0
The Montgomery County R-2 Wildcats’ Basketball team played only 1 game last week, on Tuesday, December 10. It was an exciting one, as they fell behind early against South Callaway, then scored a total of 61 points in the second and third quarter to take a 17 point lead, followed by great free throw shooting in the fourth quarter to come away with an 85-75 win. With this game the Wildcats now have a record of 5 wins and 0 losses.
The Wildcats were also scheduled to play New Haven this past Friday, December 13. However, the game was postponed to a later date because of inclement weather across most of Missouri on Friday.
SOUTH CALLAWAY GAME
In facing South Callaway, the Wildcats were playing a team they had not defeated in several years. With both teams having several players that also played each other just a few weeks ago in two different football games, and this game figured to be just as intense and physical as the football games were. It was just that, as the teams combined for 41 fouls (20 for the Wildcats and 21 for SC), 52 free throws, and 160 points.
The first quarter went to South Callaway, as the Bulldogs made 7 field goals/FGs, 1 3-pointer, and 3 of 3 free throws/FTs to score 20 points. The Wildcats were only able to make 3 FGs, but did make 5 of 6 FTs for 11 points, which gave SC a 20-11 lead at the end of the quarter.
Then the Wildcats had an offensive explosion by scoring 36 points in the second quarter, which averages out to 4-5 points per minute. 8 Wildcat players scored at least 1 point in the quarter, as the team made 6 FGs, 6 3-pointers and 6 of 7 FTs for their 36 points.
South Callaway didn’t have a bad offensive second quarter either, as they made 6 FGs, and 8 of 10 FTs for 20 points. However, that wasn’t enough to keep up with the Wildcats who led 47-40 at half time.
The Wildcats did not slow down in the third quarter either, as 6 players scored at least 3 points in this quarter. The Wildcats made 9 FGs, 1 3-pointer and 4 of 4 FTs for 25 points, which means the Wildcats scored 61 points in just 2 quarters of play. South Callaway tried to keep up by scoring 15 points in the quarter, but the Wildcats led 72-55 at the end of the quarter.
South Callaway did make a small comeback in the fourth quarter, as the Bulldogs made 4 FGs, and 4 3-pointers to score 20 points. Defensively, SC had “good news” and “bad news”. The “good news” was that SC kept the Wildcats from making any FGs or 3-pointers. The “bad news” for the Bulldogs was that in trying to catch up they fouled the Wildcats quite often. The Wildcats responded by making 13 of 17 FTs, to hold on to their lead and win the game 85-75.
Jerad Jordan led the Wildcats in scoring with 23 points (5 FGs/15 of 17 FTs). He was followed in the scoring by Jacob Davis with 16 points (6 FGs/4 of 5 FTs); Cameron Parrish with 14 points (2 FGs/2 3-pointers/4 of 4 FTs); Kyle Kroll with 11 points (3 3-pointers/2 of 4 FTs); Justin Hall with 8 points (4 FGs); Chase Worsham with 7 points (2 FGs/3 of 4 FTs); and Dylan Skeens and Chase Parrish with 3 points each (1 3-pointer each). Jackson Bishop and Brian Davis also played in the game, but did not score.
The Wildcats play their first 2 East Missouri (EMO) Conference games this week. On Tuesday, December 17, they will host Bowling Green. The Jr. Varsity game will be played first, starting at 6:00 p.m. The Varsity game will start around 7:30. Then this Friday, December 20, the Wildcats will play at Wright City. The JV game will start at 5:30 p.m., and the Varsity game will start around 7:00.
The Wildcats will have a 2-week break from games (not practices), during the Christmas Break. They will start the 2014 part of the season (along with the Varsity Girls team) with a home game against Van-Far (EMO Conference games) on January 3, Friday. There will be 4 games played with Van-Far that night. The Varsity teams will play at the High School gym (Girls’ first, Boys’ second), while the JV teams will play at the Montgomery City Elementary gym (Boys’ first, Girls’ second). The first games at both gyms will start at 6:00 p.m., and the second games will start at 7:30.
