LADY WILDCATS’ PLAY IN MC INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT

EARN 1ST WIN OF THE SEASON

The Montgomery County R-2 Basketball Lady Wildcats’ played 3 games in the 43rd Annual Montgomery County R-2 Invitational Tournament last week and won their first game of the 2013-14 season.  In their game on Friday, December 6, they defeated cross-county rival Wellsville-Middletown 49-36 for that win.

In their first game in the tournament they lost to Bowling Green 56-12 on Monday, December 2.  Then on Wednesday, December 4, they lost to New Haven 60-25.  The Lady Wildcats now have a record of 1 win and 3 losses.

WELLSVILLE-MIDDLETOWN GAME

The Lady Wildcats finally found their offense in this game, as they scored almost as many points in this game (49) as they had in their first 3 games of the season combined (55).  They wasted no time in getting things going in this game, as they were led by Delaney Benney’s 7 points to outscore W-M 12-7 in the first quarter.

The Lady Wildcats then had 6 players score at least 1 point in the second quarter.  In the process they made 6 of 9 free throws to outscore W-M 18-14 and lead 30-21 at halftime.

After a 32-point second quarter, both teams came out somewhat sluggish on offense in the third quarter (most likely due to better defense by both teams).  W-M was able to outscore the Lady Wildcats 9-7 in the quarter to close the score to 37-30 at the end of the quarter.

The defenses continued to limit the number of shots made in the fourth quarter, as W-M only scored 6 points.  The Lady Wildcats only made 2 baskets in the quarter.  However, W-M had to foul in order to try to catch up, and the Lady Wildcats took advantage of that by making 8 of 13 free throws to put the game away.  The Lady Wildcats outscored W-M 12-6 in the final quarter to win the game 49-36.

Benney led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 15 points (4 field goals/FGs and 7 of 8 free throws/FTs).  She was followed in the scoring by Hope Eoff with 11 points (2 FGs/1 3-pointer/4 of 5 FTs); Jessica Dryden with 8 points (4 FGs); Anna Ash with 6 points (3 FGs); Viv Worsham with 4 points (2 FGs); Emily O’Keefe with 3 points (3 of 6 FTs); and Victoria Weitkamp with 2 points (2 of 6 FTs).  Sammie Korte also played in the game but did not score.

BOWLING GREEN GAME

In Monday’s game the Lady Wildcats and Bowling Green had similar scoring in each of the first 3 quarters.  BG outscored the Lady Wildcats 17-4 in the first quarter and 17-6 in the second quarter, to lead 34-10 at halftime.

The third quarter was much the same, as BG outscored the Lady Wildcats 16-2 to lead 50-12 at the end of the quarter.  The game clock ran continuously in the fourth quarter due to the “30-point lead mercy rule”, and BG outscored the Lady Wildcats 6-0 to win the game 56-12.

Ash led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 5 points (1 field goal/FG and 1 3-pointer).  She was followed in the scoring by Weitkamp with 4 points each (2 FGs); and Eoff with 3 points (1 FG/1 free throw).  Dryden, Korte, O’Keefe, Benney, and Worsham also played in the game but did not score.

NEW HAVEN GAME

The Lady Wildcats got off to a good start against New Haven, as they scored 10 points in the first quarter and only trailed New Haven 15-10 at the end of the quarter.  However, New Haven then outscored the Lady Wildcats 17-4 in the second quarter to lead 32-14 at halftime.

The third quarter was about the same, as NH outscored the Lady Wildcats 20-8 to lead 52-22 at the end of the quarter.  The clock ran continuously for most of the fourth quarter (whenever New Haven at least a 30-point lead) and the scoring was much lower this quarter.  NH outscored the Lady Wildcats 8-3 in the fourth quarter to give NH a 60-25 win.

Eoff led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 16 points (2 FGs/4 3-pointers).  She was followed in the scoring by Ash with 5 points (1 FG/1 3-pointer), and Benney with 4 points (2 FGs).  Dryden, Korte, O’Keefe, Weitkamp, and Worsham also played in the game, but did not score.

The Lady Wildcats have 2 games this week.  On Monday, December 9, they hosted Orchard Farm.  On Thursday, December 12, they will play at Warrenton.  The Jr. Varsity game will be played first on Thursday, starting at 6:00 p.m.  The Varsity game will start around 7:30.

They will then play their first 2 East Missouri (EMO) Conference games next week.  On Monday, December 16, they will host Bowling Green.  The Jr. Varsity game will be played first, starting at 6:00 p.m.  The Varsity game will start around 7:30.  On Thursday, December 19, they will play at Wright City.  The JV game will start at 5:30 p.m. and the Varsity game will start around 7:00.

Congratulations Lady Wildcats on your win over Wellsville-Middletown and best wishes as you continue with your 2013-14 season.  Go Lady Wildcats!
