SOFTBALL LADY WILDCATS TAKE SECOND PLACE
IN THE MISSOURI DISTRICT 11 TOURNAMENT
For only the second time in the history of Girls’ Softball at Montgomery County R-2 (which was started in the 1980s) the Lady Wildcats played in a District Tournament Championship game, with the opportunity to continue on in the State Playoffs. Such was the case this past Friday, October 11, as the Lady Wildcats played against Louisiana for the District Title. Unfortunately the Lady Wildcats came up short (as they did in 1993), losing to Louisiana 6-5.
In order to play in the Championship game, the Lady Wildcats defeated Principia (from St. Louis) 8-7 in the First Round game on Wednesday, October 9. Then on Thursday, October 10, they defeated Van-Far 8-4 (a team that had defeated the Lady Wildcats earlier this season) in the Semifinal game.
In the Championship game, the Lady Wildcats fell behind Louisiana 5-0 after 2½ innings of play. However, they scored a run in the bottom of the third inning to make the score 5-1, then scored 4 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 5-5.
The score remained that way until Louisiana scored a run in the top of the seventh inning (last inning in softball games). The Lady Wildcats did not score in the bottom of the seventh and Louisiana won the game 6-5.
We will have a more detailed report on these games in next week’s issue of the Standard. In addition, we hope to have more detailed information about how this season is one of the best seasons (if not the best) in the history of Lady Wildcats’ softball.
By winning the District 11 Championship, Louisiana earned the opportunity to continue on in the Missouri State Playoffs. They will play Highland this Wednesday, October 16, at Louisiana. The winner of that game will play on Saturday, October 19, against the winner of the South Callaway vs. Jefferson (from Festus) game. The State Championship Finals will be played in Springfield, on October 25-26.
With these games the Lady Wildcats ended the season with a record of 12 wins and 11 losses. This is only the second or third time that a Lady Wildcats Softball team ended the season with a winning record. Congratulations to the Lady Wildcats, and Head Coach Trent Crenshaw and Assistant Coach Audra Heimer on a successful 2013 season!!
SOFTBALL LADY WILDCATS LOSE IN LAST 2013 REGULAR SEASON GAME
After the East Missouri (EMO) Conference Tournament was rained out on October 5, the Montgomery County R-2 Lady Wildcats had one game left in their 2013 regular season schedule before starting play in the Missouri District 11 Playoffs Tournament. That game was played on Monday, October 7, against Louisiana (the team the Lady Wildcats would play 4 days later in the District Championship game) and the Lady Wildcats lost 6-2.
The Lady Wildcats did not have much offense in the first 4 innings, as they got only 1 hit and 9 batters struck out. Meanwhile Louisiana took advantage of 2 Lady Wildcat errors, a walk and a single to score 2 runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Louisiana then scored 3 runs in the top of the third inning, on 2 doubles, a triple, a walk and another Lady Wildcat error to lead 5-0.
The Lady Wildcats scored their 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, to cut the score to 5-2. Danielle Robinson led off the inning with a walk, and reached second base on a wild pitch. With one out Miah Klekamp hit a triple to score Robinson. Klekamp then scored on a single by Corryn Hill, but that was all of the scoring the Lady Wildcats would have in this game.
Louisiana came right back and scored a run in the top of the sixth inning on a walk, a sacrifice bunt, and a single to take a 6-2 lead. The Lady Wildcats had their first 2 batters reach base in the bottom of the seventh inning, but were unable to get any key hits to score any more runs and Louisiana won the game 6-2.
The individual offensive stats for the Lady Wildcats were as follows: Klekamp 2 hits, 1 runs scored, 1 run batted in/RBI; Hill 2 hits, 1 RBI; and Robinson 1 run scored.
Hill pitched all 7 innings for the Lady Wildcats and took the loss. She allowed 6 runs (3 earned), on 5 hits, 6 walks and 3 errors. She struck out 5 batters.
With this game the Lady Wildcats ended the 2013 regular season with a record of 10 wins and 10 losses. This is one of the best seasons in the history of the Lady Wildcats Softball program, which was started in the 1980s.
Congratulations to the Lady Wildcats and their coaches on a successful 2013 season. Thank you for doing a great job of representing our school district and our school communities.
