SOCCER WILDCATS PLAY IN WINFIELD TOURNAMENT
The Montgomery County R-2 Wildcats Soccer team played 3 matches in 4 days in the Winfield Warrior Tournament, which was held the last week of September. Each match saw definite improvement, but the Wildcats did not come away with a win.
On September 25, they lost to Lutheran 10-0. On September 26, they lost to Winfield 5-0. Then on September 28, they led Elsberry 4-2 late in the second half, but eventually lost 5-4.
The following is a report on each match.
Lutheran took little time to score in this match, scoring their first goal at the 5:54 mark (45 minute halves) and they never looked back. Within the next 10 minutes Lutheran scored 4 more goals at the 9:28 mark, the 10:40 mark, the 11: 06 mark, and the 16:04 mark to lead 5-0. Lutheran’s last goal of the first half came at the 39:14 mark to make the score 6-0 at halftime.
The second half was similar to the first, as Lutheran scored early and often. The first goal came at the 3:36 mark, followed by goals at the 5:18 mark, the 13:57 mark and the 21:39 mark. The game ended at that point because of the “10-goal lead mercy rule”. The Wildcats were only able to get 2 shots on goal in this game.
Although the Wildcats did not win this match, the performance was much better on both sides of the ball. The Wildcats had 22 shots on goal in this match (14 in the first half and 8 in the second half) compared to only 2 shots on goal the day before. Also, they held Winfield to 16 shots on goal in this match, compared to the 27 shots on goal by Lutheran the day before.
Unfortunately the Wildcats were not able to get any of their shots past the Winfield goalie, while Winfield was able to score 5 times. Winfield’s first goal came at the 7:22 mark of the first half. This was followed by goals at the 16:34 mark, the 19:14 mark, and the 31:14 mark of the first half to make the score 4-0 at halftime. Winfield scored their final goal at the 30:12 mark of the second half to win the match 5-0.
The Wildcats probably had their best match of the 2013 season against Elsberry, as they took an early lead, lost the lead and then regained it, only to give up 3 goals late in the match to lose 5-4.
Zac Leonard gave the Wildcats the early lead, as he scored a goal at the 3:22 mark. However, Elsberry came back with a goal at the 9:21 mark to tie the game, and another goal at the 9:58 mark to take a 2-1 lead.
The Wildcats didn’t give up, and tied the score at the 13:29 mark on a goal by Brendan Hazel. They then took a 3-2 lead on a goal by Travis Oden at the 20:05 mark. Neither team scored the rest of the first half.
The Wildcats increased their lead to 4-2 on Zac Leonard’s second goal of the match at the 22:32 mark of the second half. Unfortunately the Wildcats did not score the rest of the match, while Elsberry scored 3 goals to get the win. Elsberry’s 3 goals were scored in less than 4½ minutes of play, with the goals coming at the 32:41 mark, the 35:25 mark, and the 37:03 mark of the second half.
Despite the loss, the Wildcats showed continued improvement in their play. A good example of this is that they once again had more shots on goal (18-16) than their opponent did.
The Wildcats had a busy schedule last week, with another 3 matches in 4 days. A separate report on these matches should also be in this issue of the Standard.
The Wildcats have only 1 match this week, as they host Elsberry this Thursday, October 10. The match will start at 5:00 p.m.
This will be the third time the Wildcats have played Elsberry this season. Having lost the previous 2 matches by 1 goal each, the Wildcats will be trying their best to come away with a victory this time.
The Wildcats encourage you to come and cheer them on to victory against Elsberry. Go Wildcats!
