SOCCER WILDCATS SHOW SIGNS OF IMPROVEMENT
BUT LOSE TWO MATCHES
The Montgomery County R-2 Wildcats Soccer team played its second and third matches of the 2013 season, showing some improvement but losing both matches. On September 10, Tuesday, they lost 3-2 to Elsberry. Elsberry defeated the Wildcats 3 times last year with the closest score being 7-2. Then on September 12, Thursday, they had more shots on goal (20-10) than Father Tolton Catholic (from Columbia), but lost 3-1.
The Wildcats played very well in this match and scored the first goal, when Freshman Brendan Hazel kicked one in the net in the 17th minute of the first half (each half lasts for 45 minutes). Unfortunately Elsberry came back with back-to-back goals in the 22nd and the 23rd minutes of the first half. Neither team scored the rest of the first half and Elsberry led 2-1 at halftime. The Wildcats ended the half with 6 shots on goal, while Elsberry had 7 shots on goal.
Elsberry increased its lead to 3-1 with a goal in the 15th minute of the second half. The Wildcats did not give up, and Senior Josh Thurman made the score 3-2 with a goal in the 43rd minute of the second half. Neither team scored in the final 2 minutes of the match and Elsberry won 3-2. The Wildcats had 7 shots on goal in the second half, while Elsberry had 5.
FATHER TOLTON MATCH
Last year the Wildcats lost to Father Tolton 4-3 in the only match they played each other. The Wildcats did not play as well this time and lost 3-1.
Father Tolton scored a goal early, putting the ball in the net in the 3rd minute of the first half. The Wildcats came back and tied the game at 1-1, when Senior Michael Scott scored in the 25th minute of the half. However, Father Tolton scored its second goal of the half in the 35th minute of the half to lead 2-1, which was the score at halftime.
The Wildcats had 9 shots on goal in the first half, while Father Tolton only had 5. The Wildcats also out shot FT in the second half (11 shots to 5 shots). However, Tolton scored the only goal of the second half to make the final score 3-1.
Wildcats Head Coach Shanna Barkhume had the following comment about the matches, “We played very well in the Elsberry match and quite possibly could have won. We did not play as well against Father Tolton, even though we had more shots on goal than they did.”
The Wildcats played in the Moberly Tournament this past week. They played their first match on Thursday, September 19, against Moberly. They then played 2 matches on Saturday, September 21. A report on these matches should be in next week’s issue of the Standard.
This week the Wildcats will play in the Warrior Tournament, at Winfield. Their first match is on Wednesday, September 25, at 5:00 p.m., against Lutheran of St. Peters. On Thursday, September 26, they will play Winfield at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, September 28, they will play Elsberry at 10:00 a.m.
The Wildcats have a very busy schedule next week with 3 home matches. On Monday, September 30, they host Boonville. On Tuesday, October 1, they host Battle High School (new school in Columbia). On Thursday, October 3, they host Canton. The matches are played at the R-2 Soccer field, located just south of the high school, and all of the matches start at 5:00 p.m.
The Soccer Wildcats and Coach Barkhume encourage you to attend these matches and support them as they try to continue their improvement and pick up some wins. Go Wildcats!
