SOCCER WILDCATS PLAY WELL BUT LOSE IN SEASON OPENER
The Montgomery County R-2 Wildcats Soccer team played its 2013 season opening match last Thursday, September 5, as the Wildcats hosted St. Clair. The Wildcats played well against St. Clair, but lost 3-0. Last year St. Clair defeated the Wildcats 9-1.
The Wildcats played great in the first half, as they maintained possession of the ball for about 60% of the playing time. As a result, they held St. Clair to only 4 shots on net. A defensive breakdown in the 22nd minute of the half led to St. Clair’s first and only goal of the half. The Wildcats did have 10 shots on net in the first half, but were unable to score.
St. Clair controlled the second half, as the Bulldogs had 10 shots on net and scored two goals in the 51st and 58th minute of the game. The Wildcats had 6 shots on net in the second half, but again they did not score.
Wildcats Head Coach Shanna Barkhume had the following comments about the game, “Overall it was a well played game, with both teams playing intense soccer until the last minute. We had great offensive leadership from Zac Leonard and Josh Thurman. Goalie Jacob Cunningham came up with several great saves to keep the score low.”
“Our young defense played well and showed promise for great improvement to come during the season. Cole Schmidt, Chase Parrish and Logan Henke stood out on the defensive end of the field. Although we lost it was a promising start to the 2013 season, with great play seen from the whole team,” Coach Barkume concluded.
The Wildcats have 2 matches scheduled for this week. On Tuesday, September 10, will play at Elsberry. Then on Thursday, September 12, they will play at Father Tolton Catholic High School in Columbia. Both matches will start at 5:00 p.m.
Next Monday, September 16, the Wildcats have a match at Mexico, which will start at 5:00 p.m. Then they will play in the Moberly Tournament, with matches being played on Thursday through Saturday, September 19-21. No other information about the tournament was available when this report was written.
Congratulations to the Soccer Wildcats on a good start, even though you did not win. Best wishes on your efforts to continue this improvement and have a successful season.
