SB LADY WILDCATS PUT DEFENSE & OFFENSE TOGETHER FOR A “PERFECT” NIGHT
The Montgomery County R-2 Lady Wildcats Softball team put its 1-0 record on the line Thursday, August 29, when they traveled to take on Hermann. Freshman pitcher Corryn Hill shined, as she pitched a perfect game, most likely the first ever by a Lady Wildcat pitcher.
In pitching the perfect game, Hill faced the minimum of 15 hitters (5 innings). She struck out 8 batters, and threw only 48 pitches to earn her second victory in as many games and days.
In support of Hill’s perfect game the Lady Cats could not have been more solid defensively, as they were able to handle everything that was hit by Hermann. Danielle Robinson made a nice catch on a fly ball to right field. Adrianna Reese was able to secure a ball that was hit well in front of her in left field, causing her to have to cover a lot of ground quickly to make the catch. Second baseman Taylor Lauer was able to make a nifty snag on a hard hit line drive between the first and second base. Miah Klekamp was able to make two routine plays on groundballs that were hit to her at shortstop.
The Lady Wildcats offense also came through, as 7 Lady Wildcat batters either scored and/or drove in a run in this game. This combination of great pitching, solid defense, and productive offense led the Lady Wildcats to an 11-0 win.
The Lady Wildcats put themselves on top in the top of the first inning when Cayleigh Lively hit a one-out single that scored Shelby Miles and Shelby Roark, who had been hit by a pitch and walked, respectively. The Lady Wildcats never looked back from that point.
In the second inning the Lady Wildcats plated another run with a one-out single by Roark that scored Miles, who had reached on an error. This gave R-2 a 3-0 lead.
Lively struck again in the third inning when she led off with a single, and then scored on a Lauer RBI groundout. This gave the Lady Wildcats a 4-0 lead.
Montgomery County busted the game open in the fourth inning, when the Lady Wildcats scored three times. Miles led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Roark followed that with a 13-pitch at bat that finished in a base-on-balls. Roark moved up to second on a stolen base, and Lively struck again with a 2-RBI single to centerfield. Lively, then scored on a Payten LaBrier single that pushed the Lady Wildcats lead to 7-0.
The Lady Wildcats then scored 4 runs in the fifth inning, to push the lead to 11-0. Klekamp led off the inning with a double. Roark hit a one-out double scoring Klekamp. Hill then doubled to score Roark. LaBrier’s hard it ball off the shortstop scored Hill to push the lead to 10-0. The final run of the game came off the bat of Lauer, as she hit a hard shot to the third baseman, who threw the ball away scoring LaBrier.
Hill finished the game with a perfect 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth inning, and the game ended due to the “Mercy Rule” (a team has a 10-run lead after 5 innings of play). This win improved the Lady Wildcats record to 2-0, the best start in several years for a Lady Wildcats’ Softball team.
Congratulations to the Lady Wildcats and to Corryn on this perfect game and a successful start to the 2013 season. Go Lady Wildcats!!
