LADY WILDCATS’ SEASON ENDS WITH LOSS IN DISTRICT TOURNAMENT

The Montgomery County R-2 Basketball Lady Wildcats’ 2012-13 season came to an end last Monday, February 18, with a 55-29 loss to South Callaway.  The game was played in the Missouri District 6 Playoff Tournament at North Callaway High School.

This was the third time R-2 and South Callaway had faced each other this season.  SC had won the two previous meetings by the scores of 36-26 (Jan. 3), and 45-30 (Jan. 11).

In last Monday’s game South Callaway took control of the game early by outscoring the Lady Wildcats 15-4 in the first quarter.  The Lady Wildcats had their best quarter in the second period, as they outscored SC 9-8 to make the score 24-13 at halftime.

However, South Callaway put the game away in the third quarter by outscoring the Lady Wildcats 16-8 to take a 39-21 lead.  The fourth quarter scoring was the same as the third quarter scoring (16-8 in favor of SC) to make the final 55-29.

Elinor Arens led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 9 points each (3 field goals/FGs and 1 3-pointer).  She was followed in the scoring by Hope Eoff with 7 points (2 FGs/1 3-pointer), Mackenzie Yager and Delaney Benney with 3 points each (Yager 1 3-pointer and Benney 1 FG and 1 free throw/FT), and Makayla Yager, Emily O’Keefe, and Shelby Roark with 2 points each (Yager and O’Keefe 2 FTs each, and Roark 1 FG), and Danielle Schmidt with 1 point (1 FT).  No other statistic information was available when this report was written.

With this loss the Lady Wildcats ended the season with a record of 3 wins and 23 losses.  Also, the Lady Wildcats’ East Missouri (EMO) Conference record ended at 2 wins and 7 losses, which placed them in 7th place in the conference standings (10 teams).  The Silex Lady Owls won the conference title with a perfect 9-0 record.

Hermann won the District 6 Championship by first defeating South Callaway 64-26 on Wednesday, and then defeating North Callaway 60-44 in the Championship game on Saturday.  Hermann will face North Technical High School (out of St. Louis) on Wednesday, February 27.  The winner of that game will move on to the State Quarterfinal game on Saturday, March 2.

The Lady Wildcats will be losing Seniors Mackenzie and Makayla Yager and Danielle Schmidt to graduation in May.  Their hard work, solid effort and leadership will be missed.  Best Wishes to Mackenzie, Makayla, and Danielle as you move on to new adventures in your life!

Concerning the team’s outlook for next season, the Lady Wildcats should be returning seven players from this year’s Varsity team and possibly have some players moving up from this year’s Jr. Varsity team.  This combination, along with a solid effort to improve during the off-season, should help the Lady Wildcats have a successful 2013-14 season.

Thank you Lady Wildcats and coaching staff for your hard work and dedication this season.
