R-2 BASKETBALL LADY WILDCATS’ REGULAR SEASON ENDS

The Montgomery County R-2 Basketball Lady Wildcats’ 2012-13 regular season has come to an end with 3 games since the last report.  On February 8, Friday, the Lady Wildcats lost to Elsberry 42-17.  On Tuesday, February 12, they lost to Community R-VI 44-23.  On Thursday, February 14, they lost to Silex (ranked #1 in the state for Class 2 schools) 60-28.

All three of these games were East Missouri (EMO) Conference games and the Lady Wildcats’ conference ended with 2 wins and 7 losses.  Their overall record is 3 wins and 22 losses.

In the Elsberry game the Lady Wildcats had a good first quarter, as they held Elsberry to only 8 points while scoring 6 points themselves.  However, the second and third quarters were their undoing.  Elsberry outscored R-2 11-4 in the second quarter to lead 19-10 at halftime, and then outscored R-2 12-2 in the third quarter to lead 31-12.  The fourth quarter was a little better for the Lady Wildcats, but they still were outscored 11-5 and Elsberry won the game 42-17.

Danielle Schmidt and Shelby Roark led the team in scoring with 4 points each (2 field goals/FGs each).  They were followed in the scoring by Emily O’Keefe and Sammie Korte with 3 points each (O’Keefe 1 FG and 1 free throw/FT, and Korte 1 3-pointer), Mackenzie Yager with 2 points (1 FG), and Makayla Yager with 1 point (1 FT).  Jessica Dryden, Hope Eoff, Elinor Arens, and Delaney Benney also played but did not score.

In other key stats, Roark led the team in rebounds with 5, and Mackenzie Yager had 4.  Eoff led the team in steals with 4, and Makayla Yager and Schmidt had 3 each.  Roark and Benney led the team in assists with 2 each.

In last Tuesday’s game Community R-VI gradually built and maintained its lead against the Lady Wildcats.  R-VI outscored the Lady Wildcats 9-3 in the first quarter and 13-10 in the second quarter to lead 22-13 at halftime.

The third quarter was as close as the second quarter, as R-VI only outscored the Lady Wildcats 8-6 to lead 30-19.  However, R-VI put the game away in the fourth quarter by outscoring R-2 14-4 to win the game 44-23.

Eoff led the team in scoring with 8 points (3 FGs/2 FTs).  She was followed in the scoring by Mackenzie Yager and Arens with 6 points each (Yager 1 FG/1 3-pointer/1 FT and Arens 2 3-pointers), O’Keefe with 2 points (1 FG), and Roark with 1 point (1 FT).  Makayla Yager, Schmidt, Dryden, Benney and Korte, also played but did not score.

In other key stats, Roark led the team in rebounds with 5, and Makayla Yager and Schmidt had 4 each.  Mackenzie Yager led the team in assists and steals with 2 each.

In Thursday’s game against #1 state-ranked Silex, the Lady Wildcats played well offensively in the first half.  However, they were unable to maintain that offense in the second half.

The Lady Wildcats scored 9 points in the first quarter and 12 in the second quarter for 21 points at halftime, in one of their best offensive performances of the season.  However, Silex had a 38-21 lead at halftime, scoring 18 points in the first quarter and 20 in the second quarter.

The Lady Wildcats’ defense improved greatly in the second half, but their offense dropped off considerably.  Silex outscored R-2 13-4 in the third quarter to increase its lead to 51-25.  Then in the fourth quarter Silex outscored the Lady Wildcats 9-3 to come away with the 60-28 win.

Eoff led the team in scoring with 13 points (4 FGs/1 3-pointer/2 FTs).  She was followed in the scoring by Mackenzie Yager with 8 points each (1 FG/2 3-pointers), Makayla Yager, Schmidt, and O’Keefe with 2 points each (1 FG each), and Arens with 1 point (1 FT).  Roark, Dryden, Benney, and Korte also played but did not score.

In other key stats, Roark led the team in rebounds with 10, and O’Keefe had 6.  Mackenzie Yager and Eoff led the team in assists with 3 each.  Eoff led the team in steals with 2.

The Lady Wildcats played South Callaway on Monday, February 18, in a First Round game in the Missouri District 6 Tournament for Class 3 schools (based on high school enrollment numbers).  The tournament is being played this week at North Callaway High School.  If the Lady Wildcats won that game, they will play Wednesday, February 20, against Hermann (#1 seed in the tournament) at 6:00.  The Championship Game will be played on Friday, February 22, at 7:00 p.m. As is the case for all of the teams in the district tournaments and the state playoffs, the Lady Wildcats must win each game for their season to continue.

Best wishes to the Lady Wildcat players and coaches as you play in the District 6 Tournament!
