Home » Girls' Basketball NewsHS Girls Basketball Report BY ALAN BRAKEJanuary 30, 2013 Montgomery County High SchoolBASKETBALL LADY WILDCATS PLAY IN THE HERMANN TOURNAMENT The Montgomery County R-2 Basketball Lady Wildcats earned their second win of the season by defeating Wright City 37-11 last Saturday, January 26, in the Hermann Tournament. Earlier in the week the Lady Wildcats lost to Hermann 70-13 on Monday, January 22. Then on Wednesday, January 24, they lost to St. Clair 49-24. The Lady Wildcats’ victory on Saturday avenged a 35-28 loss to Wright City on December 13. This time the Lady Wildcats took control of the game early, leading 9-1 at the end of the first quarter. They then outscored WC 11-2 in the second quarter to lead 20-3 at halftime. The second half was a little closer, but the Lady Wildcats continued to increase their lead in each quarter. They outscored WC 8-6 in the third quarter to make the score 28-9, and then outscored WC 9-2 in the fourth quarter to win the game 37-11. Hope Eoff led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 10 points (5 field goals/FGs). She was followed in the scoring by Mackenzie Yager with 8 points (1 FG, 1 3-pointer, 3 free throws/FTs), Emily O’Keefe and Shelby Roark with 6 points each (O’Keefe 3 FGs and Roark 2 FGs/2 FTs), Elinor Arens with 4 points (1 3-pointer/1 FT), Danielle Schmidt with 2 points (1 FG), and Delaney Benney with 1 point (1 FT). Makayla Yager, Jessica Dryden and Lauren McGarvey also played but did not score. In Monday’s game the Lady Wildcats played Hermann (ranked 3rd in the state Top 10 rankings), for the third time this season and the result was the same as the first two games. Hermann took control of the game in the first quarter outscoring the Lady Wildcats 23-2, and then outscored R-2 21-7 in the second quarter to lead 44-9 at halftime. The third quarter Hermann outscored the Lady Wildcats 16-4 to lead 60-13. With a continuous “running clock” in the fourth quarter there was less scoring, as Hermann outscored R-2 10-0 to win the game 70-13. Makayla Yager led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 8 points (4 field goals/FGs). She was followed in the scoring by Arens with 3 points (1 3-pointer), and O’Keefe with 2 points (1 FG). Mackenzie Yager, Schmidt, Roark, Dryden, McGarvey, Eoff, and Benney also played but did not score. The Lady Wildcats fared some better in Wednesday’s game against St. Clair, but the second and third quarters were their undoing in this game. They played even against St. Clair in the first quarter, as the score was tied 9-9 at the end of the period. However, that was as close as the game would be. St. Clair outscored the Lady Wildcats 14-5 in the second quarter to lead 23-14 at halftime. Then SC outscored R-2 13-1 in the third quarter to increase its lead to 36-15. The Lady Wildcats got their offense going again in the fourth quarter scoring 9 points, but SC scored another 13 points to make the final score 49-24. O’Keefe led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 6 points (2 FGs/2 FTs). She was followed in the scoring by Arens with 4 points (1 FG/2 FTs), Mackenzie Yager, Roark and McGarvey with 3 points each (Yager 1 3-pointer, Roark and McGarvey 1 FG/1FT each), Makayla Yager and Dryden with 2 points each (1 FG each), and Eoff with 1 point (1 FT). Schmidt, Benney and Korte also played but did not score. This week the Lady Wildcats start to bring the 2012-13 regular season to an end, as they play 7 games in the next 3 weeks. On Monday, January 28, they hosted Clopton in an East Missouri (EMO) Conference game. This Friday, February 1, the Varsity Lady Wildcats and Wildcats will play against Wellsville-Middletown (at Wellsville) in another EMO Conference game. Also, it is the annual Montgomery County Trophy game and the annual “Pink Out” game (effort by both schools to raise funds for the Helen Reagan Cancer Fund). The Girls’ game will start at 6:00 p.m., followed by the Boys’ game around 7:30. Next week the Lady Wildcats have 3 games. On Monday, February 4, they host North Callaway in EMO Conference game. On Thursday, February 7, they will host Fulton in a non-conference game. On both nights the Jr. Varsity team will play first at 6:00, followed by the Varsity game around 7:30. On Friday, February 8, the Varsity Lady Wildcats and the Varsity Wildcats will play an EMO Conference game at Elsberry. This is a “make-up” game for both teams from games that were postponed in late December. The Lady Wildcats will play first at 6:00, followed by the Wildcats’ game around 7:30. The Lady Wildcat players and coaches encourage you to attend their games, to support them and cheer them to victory
