R-2 BASKETBALL WILDCATS BOUNCE BACK WITH 2 WINS LAST WEEK

After winning only one of three games in the South Callaway Tournament two weeks ago, the Montgomery County R-2 Wildcats Boys’ basketball team bounced back with two solid, non-conference, road wins last week.  On Tuesday, January 15, they defeated Warrenton 68-55 in a double overtime game.  Then on Friday, January 18, they defeated Owensville 61-42.

With these wins the Wildcats improved their overall record to 9 wins and 7 losses.  They also developed positive momentum, as they head into the Hermann Tournament this week and the final three weeks of the regular season in which they play 6 East Missouri (EMO) Conference games (they currently have a 3-0 EMO Conference record).

The Wildcats and Warrenton faced each other earlier this season in the Montgomery County R-2 Tournament, which Warrenton won 53-51.  Last week’s game, which went into double overtime, was no different.  In addition, they face each other again this week in the Hermann Tournament (Tuesday, January 22, at 7:30).

Both teams scored 12 points in the first quarter.  The Wildcats then outscored Warrenton 16-10 in the second quarter to take a 28-22 lead at halftime.

Warrenton was able to comeback in the third quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 15-9 to tie the game at 37-37 at the end of the quarter.  Both teams then scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to make the score 47-47 at the end of regulation play.  Warrenton did have the last shot at the end of the game, but did not make it.

In the first overtime (4 minutes long) neither team could get much going, as they each scored just 4 points to make the score 51-51.  After surviving another last second missed shot by Warrenton at the end of the first OT period, the Wildcats took off in the second overtime period outscoring Warrenton 17-4 (including 9 of 11 free throws/FTs) to win the game 68-55.

Jerad Jordan led the Wildcats in scoring with 22 points (1 field goals/FGs, 4 3-pointers, 8 FTs).  He was followed in the scoring by Cameron Parrish with 20 points (5 FGs/2 3-pointers/4 FTs), Jacob Davis with 10 points (3 FGs/4 FTs), Brian Davis with 8 points (4 FGs), Justin Hall with 4 points (1 FG/2 FTs), Jackson Bishop with 3 points (1 3-pointer), and Tim Kroll with 1 point (1 FT).  Chase Worsham also played but did not score.

In other key stats, Parrish led R-2 in rebounds with 17.  Jordan and J. Davis led the team in steals with 3 each.  Jordan led the team in assists with 3.  J. Davis led the team in blocked shots with 2.

The Wildcats wasted no time taking control of the Owensville game last Friday, as they outscored Owensville 27-6 in the first quarter.  R-2 then outscored Owensville 14-13 in the second quarter to lead 41-19 at halftime.

The Wildcats did not have as much offense in the second half, but their defense was solid in the third quarter and they outscored Owensville 9-7 to lead 50-26 at the end of the quarter.  Owensville was able to outscore R-2 16-11 in the fourth quarter, but that wasn’t nearly enough and the Wildcats won 61-42.

Jordan led the Wildcats in scoring with 24 points (1 FG/6 3-pointers/4 FTs).  He was followed in the scoring by Parrish with 13 points (2 FGs/3 3-pointers), Hall with 12 points (5 FGs/2 FTs), T. Kroll with 5 points (1 3-pointer/2 FTs), J. Davis and Kyle Kroll with 3 points each (J. Davis 1 FG/1 FT and K. Kroll 1 3-pointer), and B. Davis with 2 points (1 FG).  Dylan Skeens, Bishop, and Worsham also played but did not score.

In other key stats, Hall and Bishop led the Wildcats in rebounds with 5 each.  J. Davis led the team in assists with 5.  J. Davis and Jordan led the team in steals with 2 each.  Parrish led the team in blocked shots with 2.

This week the Wildcats have 3 games in the Hermann Tournament.  As was previously mentioned, they play Warrenton on Tuesday, January 22, at 7:30, at the Hermann High School gym.  They will play their second game on Thursday, January 24, against either St. James or Wright City at 6:00 (if they win Tuesday they will play at the high school gym, if they lose Tuesday they will play at the middle school gym).  They will play their third game on Saturday, January 26, at the high school gym (opponent and the time of the game will be determined by the outcome of the games on Tuesday and Thursday).

Next week the Wildcats begin to end the 2012-13 regular season (3 weeks left) with 2 EMO Conference games.  On Tuesday, January 29, they will host the Clopton Hawks.  The Jr. Varsity team will play first at 6:00, followed by the Varsity game around 7:30.

On Friday, February 1, the Varsity Wildcats and Lady Wildcats will play against Wellsville-Middletown (at Wellsville) in another EMO Conference game.  It is also the annual Montgomery County Trophy game and the annual “Pink Out” game (effort by both schools to provide support for the Helen Reagan Cancer Fund).  The Girls’ game will be first at 6:00 p.m., followed by the Boys’ game around 7:30.

The Wildcats encourage you to attend their games, to support them and cheer them on to victory.
