R-2 WILDCATS BASKETBALL TEAM PLAYS IN SOUTH CALLAWAY TOURNAMENT

The Montgomery County R-2 Wildcats Boys’ basketball team played 3 games last week in the South Callaway Tournament.  Prior to the tournament, the Wildcats also played a road game against Centralia on January 4.

In the Centralia game the Wildcats lost 51-47.  In the first game of the tournament on Monday, January 7, they lost to South Callaway 61-47.  The Wildcats then bounced back in the Consolation Semifinal game on Wednesday, January 9, with a 71-67 win over Harrisburg.  On Friday, January 11, they lost to Hermann 52-24 in the Consolation/5th Place game.

The Centralia game was fairly close throughout, with the second and third quarters being the deciding factor.  The game was tied at 9-9 at the end of the first quarter.  Then Centralia outscored the Wildcats 13-10 in the second quarter to lead 22-19 at halftime.

Centralia continued to increase its lead in the third quarter, as the Panthers outscored the Wildcats 15-11 to make the score 37-30.  The Wildcats made somewhat of a comeback in the final quarter, outscoring Centralia 17-14.  However, it wasn’t enough and Centralia won 51-47.

Jerad Jordan led the Wildcats in scoring with 11 points (2 field goals/FGs, 1 3-pointer, 4 free throws/FTs).  He was followed in the scoring by Jacob Davis with 9 points (4 FGs/1 FT), Cameron Parrish with 8 points (4 FGs), Justin Hall with 7 points (2 FGs/3 FTs), Chase Worsham with 6 points (3 FGs), Tim Kroll with 4 points (1 FG/2 FTs), and Dylan Skeens with 2 points (1 FG).  Brian Davis and Kyle Kroll also played but did not score.

In other key stats, Hall led R-2 in rebounds with 7 and J. Davis had 6.  Hall also blocked 2 shots.  Jordan led the team in assists and steals with 2 each.

When the Wildcats played South Callaway in December, the game was close through the first three quarters before SC pulled away to a 20-point win (51-31).  The end result of last Monday’s tournament game was similar (a 14-point win for SC), but this time SC gradually built its lead throughout the game.

In the first quarter South Callaway outscored the Wildcats 14-11.  In the second quarter SC outscored R-2 13-12, to lead 27-23 at halftime.  In the third quarter SC outscored the Wildcats 16-12, to lead 43-35.  Then in the fourth quarter SC outscored R-2 18-12, to come away with the 61-47 win.

Tim Kroll and Parrish led the Wildcats in scoring with 14 points each (Kroll 3 FGs/2 3-pointers/2 FTs, Parrish 4 FGs/2 3-pointers).  They were followed in the scoring by Jordan with 7 points (2 3-pointers/1 FT), Hall with 6 points (2 FGs/2 FTs), J. Davis with 4 points (2 FGs), and Jackson Bishop with 2 points (1 FG).  B. Davis and Worsham also played but did not score.

In other key stats, Parrish led the Wildcats in rebounds with 7, blocked shots with 3, and steals with 2.  Hall also blocked 2 shots.

The Wildcats bounced back on Wednesday with a “come from behind” victory over Harrisburg.  Both teams really wanted to win this game since they had both been victims of an upset loss in their First Round games.  This made for an exciting, high scoring game.

Harrisburg grabbed the early advantage, as the Bulldogs outscored the Wildcats 22-18 in the first quarter.  The offense for both teams kept going at a high pace in the second quarter, as they each scored 18 points giving Harrisburg a 40-36 lead at halftime.

The Wildcats were able to turn things around in the third quarter, as they outscored Harrisburg 16-8 to take a 52-48 lead at the end of the quarter.  The Wildcats were able to maintain their 4-point lead through the fourth quarter, especially with the help of making 12 of 16 free throws (most of those in the last 2 minutes of the game).  Both teams scored 19 points in the last quarter, which gave R-2 a 71-67 victory.

Parrish led the Wildcats in scoring with 22 points (5 FGs/2 3-pointers/6 FTs).  He was followed in the scoring by J. Davis with 17 points (5 FGs/7 FTs), Jordan with 14 points (3 FGs/2 3-pointers/2 FTs), T. Kroll with 8 points (1 FG/2 3-pointers), Hall with 5 points (2 FGs/1 FT) and B. Davis and Bishop with 2 points each (B. Davis 1 FG, Bishop 2 FTs).

In other key stats, Parrish led the Wildcats in rebounds with 15.  J. Davis led the team in assists with 4, followed by Jordan with 3.  J. Davis also led the team in steals with 3, and Parrish had 2.

Unfortunately the Wildcats could not produce much offense against Hermann in the Consolation Game on Friday.  Hermann took a 16-6 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

Hermann outscored R-2 8-5 in the second quarter to lead 24-11 at halftime.  Things were pretty much the same in the second half, as Hermann outscored R-2 16-6 again in the third quarter to lead 40-17.  In the last quarter Hermann outscored the Wildcats 12-7 to come away with the 52-24 win and the Consolation Trophy.

Jordan and T. Kroll led the Wildcats in scoring with 6 points each (each made 2 3-pointers).  They were followed in the scoring by Hall with 5 points (2 FGs/1 FT), B. Davis, Parrish and Worsham with 2 points each (each made 1 FG), and J. Davis with 1 point (1 FT).

In other key stats, B. Davis led the Wildcats in rebounds with 4.  Hall led the Wildcats with 2 blocked shots and 2 steals.

This week the Wildcats have 2 non-conference road games.  On Tuesday, January 15, they will play at Warrenton.  The Jr. Varsity game will be played first, starting at 5:30, followed by the Varsity game starting around 7:00.  On Friday, January 18, they will play at Owensville.  The JV game will start at 6:00, followed by the Varsity game starting around 7:30.

Next week the Wildcats will play in the Hermann Tournament, but information on who and when they play was not available when this report was written.

The Wildcats encourage you to attend their games to support them and cheer them on to victory.
