R-2 8TH GRADE BOYS SPLIT FIRST TWO GAMES OF 2013

The Montgomery County R-2 Wildcat 8th Grade Boys’ basketball team started the 2013 part of the season by playing two games last week, winning one and losing one.  On Thursday, January 3, the Wildcats hosted and defeated Warrenton 37-28.  On Friday, January 4, they traveled to Vandalia and lost to Van-Far 31-30.  With these games the 8th Graders’ record is 8 wins and 3 losses.

The Wildcats beat Warrenton twice last season in very close games, and Thursday’s game was no different.  Despite missing all 5 of their free throws in the first quarter, the Wildcats were still able to outscore Warrenton 8-6 by the end of the quarter.  The Wildcats then outscored Warrenton 9-7 in the second quarter (despite making only 1 of 4 free throws) to lead 17-13 at halftime.

The Wildcats outscored Warrenton 10-8 in the third quarter (making 2 of 2 free throws) to lead 27-21.  In the first 3-4 minutes of the fourth quarter Warrenton outscored R-2 7-3 to close the score to 30-28.  However, the Wildcats responded by outscoring Warrenton 7-0 the rest of the game to come away with a 37-28 win.

Chase Parrish led R-2 in scoring with 16 points (8 field goals/FGs).  He was followed in the scoring by Logan Henke with 10 points (1 FG/2 3-pointers/2 free throws/FT), Devon Oden and Brendan Their with 4 points each (2 FGs each), and Brendan Hazel with 3 points (1 FG/1 FT).  Roman Bronaugh, Eric Biggs, Aaron Kempf, and Austin Schwab also played but did not score.

The next night the Wildcats had another close game.  They seemed to have the game in hand with 4 minutes left in the game, only to have Van-Far come back and beat them (something the 8th Graders have done to 4-6 opponents in the last two seasons).

Van-Far scored the first basket of the game, but R-2 outscored VF 6-3 the rest of the quarter to lead 6-5.  The Wildcats outscored VF 7-6 in the second quarter to lead 13-11 at halftime.

R-2 outscored VF 5-2 in the first part of the third quarter to take an 18-13 lead, only to have VF outscore the Wildcats 5-0 to tie the game at 18-18 with 10 seconds left in the quarter.  R-2 was able to make a 3-point shot at the buzzer to take a 21-18 lead at the end of the quarter.

The Wildcats then outscored VF 9-4 in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter to take a 30-22 lead.  Unfortunately the Wildcats would not score the rest of the game, even though they took several good shots that just did not go in.

Trailing by 1 point (30-29) with about 30 seconds left in the game, Van-Far was able to beat R-2’s press to make a lay-up and take a 31-30 lead with 10-15 seconds left in the game.  In the last possession of the game the Wildcats were able to get by Van-Far’s press, however VF’s defense was still able to keep R-2 from getting off a shot and Van-Far won the game 31-30.

Parrish was R-2’s leading scorer with 14 points (4 FGs/2 3-pointers).  He was followed in the scoring by Their with 7 points (2 FGs/3 FTs), Henke with 5 points (1 FG/1 3-pointer), and Oden with 4 points (2 FGs).  Hazel, Bronaugh, and Biggs also played but did not score.

The 8th Graders do not have any games scheduled for this week.  Their season comes to an end next week with 2 games.  On Monday, January 14, they will play Mexico in their last home game of the season at the Montgomery City Elementary Gym.  Then on Friday, January 18, they will play at Winfield.  On both nights the 7th Grade Wildcat boys will play the first game at 6:00, followed by the 8th Grade game starting around 7:15.

The Wildcats invite you to attend these games, to support them and cheer them on to victory.
