BASKETBALL LADY WILDCATS WIN FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON
The Montgomery County R-2 Basketball Lady Wildcats gave themselves an early Christmas present, as they defeated Van-Far 44-26 last Tuesday, December 18, for their first win of the 2012-13 season. The Lady Wildcats also had a game against scheduled for last Thursday, December 20, but it was cancelled due to inclement weather.
With this win the Lady Wildcats improved their overall record to 1 win and 8 losses. This was also an East Missouri (EMO) Conference game, which gives the Lady Wildcats a 1-2 EMO Conference record.
The Lady Wildcats took control of the game early, as they outscored Van-Far 12-5 in the first quarter. Van-Far outscored the Lady Wildcats 7-6 in the second quarter, to cut R-2’s lead to 18-12 at halftime.
The Lady Wildcats retook control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring V-F 15-5 to lead 33-17 at the end of the quarter. The Lady Wildcats then outscored V-F 11-9 in the fourth quarter, to come away with a 44-26 victory.
Mackenzie Yager had her best offensive performance as a Varsity player, leading R-2 in scoring with 19 points (2 field goals/FGs, 5 3-pointers). She was followed in the scoring by Danielle Schmidt, Shelby Roark and Hope Eoff with 6 points each (Schmidt 2 FGs and 2 free throws/FTs, Roark and Eoff 3 FGs each), Makayla Yager, Lauren McGarvey and Delaney Benney with 2 points each (1 FG each), and Jessica Dryden with 1 point (1 FT). Emily O’Keefe and Sammie Korte also played, but did not score.
The Lady Wildcats will start the 2013 part of their season with a home game against South Callaway on January 3, Thursday. The Jr. Varsity team will play first at 6:00, followed by the Varsity game around 7:30.
The following week the Varsity Lady Wildcats will play in the South Callaway Tournament. They will play Hermann in their first game on Tuesday, January 8, at 6:00, at the Middle School Gym. They will play again on Thursday, January 10, at 6:00, against either Harrisburg or Russellville. They will play a third tournament game either on Friday or Saturday (depending on the results of the first two games).
