The Montgomery County R-2 Lady Wildcats basketball team played 2 East Missouri (EMO) Conference games last week and lost both of them. On Monday, December 10, they traveled to Bowling Green and lost 55-17. On Thursday, December 13, they hosted Wright City and lost 35-28.
Bowling Green took control of Tuesday’s game in the first quarter, as BG outscored the Lady Wildcats 22-2. The second quarter was similar to the first quarter, as BG outscored R-2 16-6 to make the score 38-8 at halftime.
The Lady Wildcats fared a little better in the second half. They scored 7 points in the third quarter, while holding BG to 9 points to make the score 47-15 at the end of the quarter. With a “running clock” in the fourth quarter the scoring was limited, as BG outscored R-2 8-2 to make the final score 55-17.
Emily O’Keefe led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 6 points (3 field goals/FGs). She was followed in the scoring by Mackenzie Yager with 5 points (5 free throws/FTs), Danielle Schmidt with 4 points (1 FG, 2 FTs), and Shelby Roark with 2 points (2 FTs). Makayla Yager, Jessica Dryden, Lauren McGarvey, Hope Eoff, Delaney Benney and Sammie Korte also played, but did not score.
The Wright City game was much closer than the BG game, but the Lady Wildcats were still unable to come up with their first win of the season. WC led the Lady Wildcats 8-6 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams scored 8 points in the second quarter to give WC a 16-14 lead at halftime.
The third quarter was the game-determining point of the game, as WC outscored the Lady Wildcats 11-4 to make the score 27-18 at the end of the quarter. R-2 outscored WC 10-8 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough and WC won the game 35-28.
Eoff led R-2 in scoring with 12 points (5 FGs, 2 FTs). She was followed in the scoring by Elinor Arens with 7 points (2 FGs, 1 3-pointer), Makayla Yager with 3 points (1 FG, 1 FT), and Mackenzie Yager, Schmidt and Roark with 2 points each (1 FG each). O’Keefe, Dryden, McGarvey, and Benney also played, but did not score.
This week the Lady Wildcats play 2 more EMO Conference games before the Christmas Break. On Tuesday, December 18, the Lady Wildcats and Wildcats Varsity teams will play at Van-Far. The Lady Wildcats game will start at 6:00, followed by the Wildcats game around 7:30. On Thursday, December 20, the Varsity and Jr. Varsity Lady Wildcats will play at Elsberry. The JV game will start at 6:00, followed by the Varsity game around 7:30.
The Lady Wildcats will start the 2013 part of their season with a home game against South Callaway on January 3, Thursday. The Jr. Varsity team will play first at 6:00, followed by the Varsity game around 7:30.
The following week the Varsity Lady Wildcats will play in the South Callaway Tournament. They will play Hermann in their first game on Tuesday, January 8, at 6:00, at the Middle School Gym. They will play two more tournament games that week.
The Lady Wildcat players and coaches encourage you to attend their games, to support them and cheer them to victory.
