HS BASKETBALL PREVIEW BY ALAN BRAKE
November 12, 2012Montgomery County High School
R-2 BASKETBALL SEASON STARTS NOVEMBER 20
FOR BOTH LADY WILDCATS AND WILDCATS
The 2012-13 basketball season starts Tuesday, November 20, for both the Montgomery County R-2 Girls’ and Boys’ teams, as they both host Hermann. There will be 4 games that night with 2 of them being played at the R-2 High School gym and 2 of them being played at the Montgomery City Elementary gym.
Both Varsity teams will play at the High School gym, with the girls’ game starting at 6:00 p.m. and the boys’ game starting around 7:30. The Jr. Varsity teams will play their games at the Montgomery City Elementary gym, with the boys’ game starting at 6:00 p.m. and the girls’ game starting around 7:30.
Both teams graduated several players from last year’s squads. The girls’ team graduated 4 players who either started every game or almost every game for the 2011-12 team, which ended with a record of 10 wins and 16 losses. The boys’ team graduated 5 players who either started or were key players off the bench for the 2011-12 team, which ended with a record of 11 wins and 13 losses.
The following is a report on the players on each team and the coaches’ thoughts about this year’s teams.
LADY WILDCATS REPORT
The 2012-13 Lady Wildcats Varsity team consists of 9 players, including Seniors Mackenzie Yager, Makayla Yager, and Danielle Schmidt; Juniors Jessica Dryden, Emily O’Keefe, Shelby Roark, Lauren McGarvey and Sammie Korte; and Sophomore Hope Eoff.
Sophomores Elinor Arens, Anna Ash, Delaney Benney will play primarily on the Jr. Varsity team, but may see some playing time on the Varsity team as well. The Freshmen players for this year’s Jr. Varsity team include Emma Davis, Mariah Davis, Taylor Lauer, Allison McGarvey, Megan Ramo, Karlie Schmidt, Victoria Weitkamp, and Viv Worsham.
Jessie Cobb will once again be the Head Coach of the Lady Wildcats’ Basketball team. Coach Cobb will be assisted again this year by Josh Pierce.
With 4 starters gone from last year’s team, it appears that the Lady Wildcats will be going through somewhat of a rebuilding season. In looking at this year’s team Coach Cobb noted that the team “does have good overall speed and quickness”, which she hopes will help the team be successful.
In addition to the R-2 Tournament, the Lady Wildcats will also play in the South Callaway Tournament and the Hermann Tournament (both held in January, 2013). They also have a full schedule of 16 regular games (9 EMO Conference games and 7 non-conference games).
The 2012-13 Wildcats’ Varsity team consists of 11 players, including Seniors Tim Kroll and Harley Walls; and Juniors Jerad Jordan, Cameron Parrish, Jackson Bishop, Brian Davis, Jacob Davis, Justin Hall, Alex Kucko, Dylan Skeens, and Chase Worsham. Jordan and Parrish played solely on the Varsity team last year. The rest of the Juniors (except for Kucko) played on last year’s Jr. Varsity team, which won 18 games and lost only 1.
The Jr. Varsity team includes 12 players. The Sophomore players are Austin Cahall, Tanner Cobb, Calvin Edwards, Kyle Kroll, Joey Moss, Travis Oden and Jacob Scarlet. The Freshmen players are Lafe Arens, Nick Galarza, Joey McCormick, Isaac Oden and Scott Wright.
Adam Meyer will once again be the Head Coach of the Wildcats’ basketball team. Coach Meyer will be assisted this year by Joe Klekamp.
With 3 returning starters and several Juniors up from last year’s successful Jr. Varsity team, Coach Meyer and the players believe they can improve on last year’s overall record of 11 wins and 13 losses. The same is true for their EMO Conference record of 4 wins and 6 losses.
Coach Meyer stated, “The players have been working really hard and are looking forward to our first game and the 2012-13 season. The Varsity is making great strides and the Jr. Varsity is learning more and more each day.”
In addition to the R-2 Tournament, the Wildcats will also play in the South Callaway Tournament and the Hermann Tournament (both held in January, 2013). They also have schedule of 15 regular games (9 EMO Conference games and 6 non-conference games).
The players and coaches of both teams encourage you to attend their games throughout the 2012-13 season and cheer them on to victory. Go Lady Wildcats and Wildcats!
